The eligibility boundary that catches the most applicants is the exclusion of educational institutions: AWS welcomes nonprofits of any annual budget size across all mission areas, but K-12 schools and universities are explicitly out of scope, so this is a program for nonprofit service organisations rather than for academic AI research. Registered 501(c) status in the United States is required.
The 2026-2027 cycle ran a two-round process: guidelines and Round One portal opened 19 March, Round One closed 5 June, results and Round Two invitations went out 14 July, the invitation-only Round Two portal opened 10 August and closed 14 September, with final results communicated mid-November and winners announced publicly on 1 December. The cycle is now closed and the program runs annually.
