NOAA's New England B-WET Program | NOAA Fisheries NOAA's New England B-WET Program NOAA's Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program is an outdoor science education program that promotes place-based experiential learning for K–12 students and related professional development for teachers.
NOAA's B-WET program fosters the growth of new, innovative programs and encourages capacity-building and outdoor science and watershed education partnerships by funding locally relevant experiential learning for K-12 teachers and students.
B-WET supports a multi-stage, learner-centered framework that include indoor and outdoor components, which help to increase understanding and stewardship of watersheds and related ocean, coastal, riverine, estuarine, and Great Lakes ecosystems. New England B-WET focuses on the priorities and challenges facing New England environments.
B-WET provides teacher professional development so that outdoor science education can be incorporated into curriculums and meet state educational standards. These experiences also encourage students to become more interested in science, technology, engineering, and math while focusing on local environmental issues.
62 projects (some spanning multiple states) have been funded across all 6 New England States totaling about $9 million in awards since 2008. New England B-WET recognizes the unique issues New England communities face and seeks to set annual priorities that assist in meeting local outdoor science education needs. The B-WET program anticipates a funding opportunity will be available in 2026.
