VANGUARD supports biotools startups to develop solutions that improve drug discovery and development; to increase biomanufacturing speed, capacity, portability, and scalability; to enhance sample processing efficiency and diagnostic assay capabilities; and to accelerate bioanalysis of emerging pathogens.
VANGUARD stands ready to support startups in deploying innovative medical countermeasures that enhance the United States’ readiness for public health emergencies.
VANGUARD is a joint initiative between BioTools Innovator, the world’s first-ever accelerator focused on life science research tools, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
BioTools Innovator VANGUARD Opportunities BioTools Innovator VANGUARD consists of two programs, a health security-focused accelerator track as part of the core BioTools Innovator annual cohort, and a specialized technical development, evaluation, and validation non-dilutive funding opportunity. Companies may apply to either or both programs.
BioTools Accelerator Program Track The BioTools Innovator VANGUARD Accelerator will select up to 10 companies annually to participate in a specialized track of the BioTools Innovator accelerator, a four-month program.
Non-Dilutive Funding Program BioTools VANGUARD provides non-dilutive funding to support the Development, Evaluation, and Validation program for technologies that advance BARDA’s mission to enhance pandemic preparedness and health security.
Through Level UP-XR: Training for Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Technicians, BioTools Innovator VANGUARD will provide non-dilutive funding to innovative CDMO and XR companies creating next-generation training solutions that strengthen the biopharmaceutical manufacturing workforce.
BioTools Innovator VANGUARD Opportunities BioTools Innovator VANGUARD consists of two programs, a wraparound Accelerator program as part of the core BioTools Innovator annual cohort, and a specialized product Development, Evaluation, and Validation (DEV) funding opportunity. Companies may apply to either or both programs.

BARDA Accelerator Network Hubs The BARDA Accelerator Network, made up of five Hubs, is built to drive growth in the startup ecosystem by speeding up the creation and market entry of cutting-edge health security solutions.
Each Hub sources promising early-stage innovations within their specialized technology areas and offers funding to evaluate the feasibility of these concepts and provides resources for commercialization, helping to fast-track product development and validation.

Diagnostics & Medical Devices The International Consortium for Research, Engineering, Acceleration of Technology Excellence (I-CREATE) Hub supports the development and acceleration of novel diagnostics and medical devices to detect, prevent, or respond to medical consequences that result from health security threats.
Focus on innovations that can improve the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and informed outcomes in pediatric/neonatal populations and immunocompromised populations to enable health equity solutions in traditionally underrepresented communities and low-resource settings.
Therapeutics and Vaccines The Vaccine Innovations and Therapeutics Acceleration Launchpad (VITAL) Hub will support the development and acceleration of next-generation therapeutic and vaccine platforms and technologies. ReadyDetect: Blood Sampling Competition Concept Stage Applications Open Through July 31, 2026 Up to five $100,000 prizes available for innovative technologies focused on capillary blood collection and processing into serum and/or plasma for decentralized diagnostics.
