Black Maternal Health Initiative - Fairfield County's Community Foundation Fairfield County's Community Foundation › Fund for Women & Girls › Black Maternal Health Initiative The Black Maternal Health Initiative Improving Health Outcomes for Black Mothers and Babies The Black Maternal Health Initiative, a collaborative effort designed to address stark maternal health disparities in Fairfield County, aims to improve health outcomes for Black mothers and babies by enhancing the birthing experience so they can have the best opportunity for a joyful birth.
Focus on promoting the expansion of doula care for Black mothers to achieve equity Strengthen the local birthing workforce by training and hiring more doulas Advocate for health systems and legislative changes that promote birth equity by centering care on the needs of Black mothers Activate community-based support networks Educate the community on maternal health disparities and effective strategies for addressing these disparities Highlight the ongoing efforts of community partners striving for birth equity and systemic change With your help, we can advance maternal health equity in Fairfield County and ensure that every Black woman and newborn child can lead a healthy life.
The Black Maternal Health Initiative aims to eliminate systemic racism and implicit bias embedded in the healthcare system that leads to disparate outcomes for Black women in Fairfield County. The initiative promotes dignity, trust, bodily autonomy, and relationship-based care for Black mothers by providing culturally competent support from doulas.
The program’s overarching goals are to improve maternal health outcomes for Black mothers and Black babies, strengthen the local birthing workforce by training, and hiring more doulas, and advocate for much-needed health system and legislative changes that will produce better maternal health outcomes.

NCI Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Academic Career Excellence (ACE) Award (K32) is a grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that funds early postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented groups, to pursue research training in cancer-related fields. The K32 award supports fellows within 12 months prior to transitioning into, or within the first two years of, a postdoctoral position. The program, operated through NCI's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), aims to enhance the pool of qualified diverse cancer researchers. Beginning with the June 12, 2025 due date, the CURE ACE Award is available in both Independent Clinical Trial Required and Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed versions.
