American Legion Burch-Wood Post 121 is proud to lead a mission rooted in service, compassion, and community. Our goal is to establish the Burch-Wood Center in Washington, Indiana a place of hope, stability, healing, and renewed purpose for homeless and at-risk veterans. This center is being created for those who once stood ready to serve our nation and now need a community ready to stand beside them.

Through safe housing, personal support, mentorship, access to essential resources, and a structured path toward independence and successful reintegration, we are working to provide veterans with the dignity, stability, and opportunities they have earned.

The Burch-Wood Veterans Reintegration Center is being developed as a place where homeless and at-risk veterans can find more than shelter. Our goal is to provide a structured path forward through safe housing, case management, employment support, benefits assistance, mentorship, life skills, and connections to community resources.

Some services may be provided directly by the center, while others may be coordinated through trusted partners, including veteran service organizations, workforce agencies, healthcare providers, local nonprofits, and government programs. Services for the Burch-Wood Veterans Reintegration Center 1.

Safe Transitional Housing Provide temporary, structured housing for homeless and at-risk veterans while they work toward stability, employment, benefits, and permanent housing. VA’s Grant and Per Diem program supports community agencies that provide transitional supportive housing for veterans experiencing homelessness. 2.

Individual Case Management Each veteran could receive a personalized reintegration plan focused on housing, employment, health, benefits, transportation, family needs, and long-term independence. 3. VA Benefits Assistance Help veterans connect with VA benefits, disability claims support, VA health care enrollment, pension information, service records, and other earned benefits.

4. Employment Readiness and Job Placement Offer résumé help, job search assistance, interview preparation, basic computer access, workforce referrals, and connections to employers. The Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program is specifically focused on helping veterans experiencing homelessness reenter competitive employment.

5. Skills Training and Workforce Partnerships Coordinate occupational skills training, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and workforce development programs through local employers, WorkOne, trade programs, and other partners. DOL notes that HVRP-supported services can include occupational skills, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, job search, and placement assistance.

6. Permanent Housing Navigation Help veterans transition from temporary housing into stable, permanent housing through rental assistance referrals, landlord partnerships, HUD-VASH coordination, and housing search support. HUD-VASH combines HUD rental assistance with VA case management and clinical services for eligible homeless veterans.

7. Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Referrals Work with partner agencies to help at-risk veterans avoid homelessness or quickly move from homelessness into housing. VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program focuses on housing stability for low-income veteran families who are homeless or at imminent risk.

8. Mental Health and Substance Use Referrals Provide referrals to VA, local mental health providers, addiction recovery programs, counseling services, crisis resources, and peer-support groups. These services should generally be coordinated through qualified and licensed providers.

Offer or coordinate access to meals, hygiene items, showers, laundry, clothing, bedding, personal care supplies, and seasonal needs such as coats, boots, and cold-weather gear. 10. Identification and Document Recovery Assist veterans with obtaining IDs, birth certificates, Social Security cards, DD-214 records, VA documents, benefit letters, and other paperwork needed for employment, housing, and services.

11. Transportation Assistance Coordinate rides or transportation support for VA appointments, job interviews, employment, court dates, benefits appointments, and other essential needs. 12.

Financial Literacy and Budgeting Provide guidance on budgeting, banking, credit repair, debt management, rent readiness, saving habits, and responsible money management. 13. Life Skills and Independent Living Support Offer classes or mentorship on cooking, cleaning, personal organization, conflict resolution, communication, goal setting, appointment management, and maintaining housing.

14. Peer Mentorship and Veteran-to-Veteran Support Create a structured mentorship program where Legion members, veterans, and trained volunteers help residents rebuild confidence, accountability, and connection. 15.

Family Reconnection and Support When appropriate, help veterans reconnect with family, rebuild healthy support systems, and access family-related resources. 16. Legal and Court Referral Support Coordinate referrals for legal aid, veteran treatment court resources, expungement information, child support issues, landlord-tenant concerns, driver’s license problems, and other civil legal needs.

17. Medical Care Coordination Help veterans connect with VA medical care, local clinics, telehealth options, medication management resources, dental referrals, vision care, and wellness services. VA homeless programs include access to housing and supportive services for veterans and their families.

18. Computer Lab and Resource Center Provide internet access, computers, printers, phones, job search tools, benefit application support, online training access, and digital literacy help. 19.

Community Meals and Outreach Host veteran meals, resource fairs, Buddy Check events, community information sessions, and outreach days for veterans who may not yet be ready to enter the program. 20. Aftercare and Alumni Support Continue checking in with veterans after they move into permanent housing to help prevent relapse into homelessness, unemployment, isolation, or crisis.

While our center is proudly rooted in Washington, Indiana, and focused on serving veterans throughout the Midwest, our mission is not limited by county or state lines.

We believe every veteran deserves dignity, stability, and a path forward. Our goal is to provide a safe, structured, and supportive environment where homeless and at-risk veterans can rebuild their lives through housing support, mentorship, employment assistance, benefits guidance, and connection to critical resources.

As a veteran-centered reintegration facility, we accept referrals from the Department of Veterans Affairs and welcome opportunities to work with VA partners, veteran service organizations, community agencies, and local support networks to help veterans access the care, structure, and resources they have earned.
