CAMH Undergraduate Award

CAMH Undergraduate Award is sponsored by Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). This award provides undergraduate trainees with the opportunity to work with CAMH scientists to develop sound research methodologies and experience mentorship while exploring mental health research across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

Koerner Centre for Research Training The Koerner Centre for Research Training also offers guidance for trainees seeking research funding. Grant experts provide services such as information sessions, scientific mentorship, and strategic, editorial and administrative reviews of funding applications. CAMH holds regular competitions to support internal and external research trainees at the postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate levels.

Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopment Centre Postdoctoral Research Award The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre promotes excellence in the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities (e.g., intellectual disability, autism) and mental health.

The Centre is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to solving major challenges in care delivery; the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities; and to increasing educational opportunities in this field for trainees and care providers.

The Azrieli Centre Postdoctoral Research Award competition provides postdoctoral researchers with a comprehensive training program in the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities mental health, with practical training in research techniques. Additionally, all researchers will contribute clinically to the Adult Neurodevelopmental Service at CAMH, and be involved in teaching, supervision and curriculum development.

One-year awards are available to support full-time postdoctoral studies under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist. Postdoctoral Research Award: Up to four, 2-year awards of $70,000 CAD/year stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance are available. Bebensee Foundation Postdoctoral Research Award in Schizophrenia Research Funding stream not offered for this competition year.

The Bebensee Postdoctoral Research Award in Schizophrenia Research, enabled by a generous gift from the Ian Douglas Bebensee Foundation, is intended to support clinical research on schizophrenia. The goal of the award is to contribute significantly to the study of the causes and treatment of schizophrenia.

Postdoctoral Research Award: 1-year award of $45,00 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance, with additional top-up of $25,000 BRIDGES (Building Research and Innovation through Diversity, Growth, Equity and Sustainability) Research Award This award is open to researchers who self-identify as Black, First Nations, Métis and Inuit, or from other racialized groups.

CAMH is dedicated to fostering a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environment for trainees. Postdoctoral Research Award: One 1-year award of $70,000 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance is available. Discovery Fund Postdoctoral Research Award The Discovery Fund provides support for postdoctoral researchers pursuing basic and clinical research to better identify, diagnose, prevent and treat mental illnesses.

Both one- and two-year awards are available to support full-time postdoctoral studies under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist. The Discovery Fund Postdoctoral Research Award, supporting prospective postdoctoral researchers, reflects an investment in the future generation of world-class researchers in mental health.

1-Year Postdoctoral Research Award: 1-year awards of $70,000 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance are available. 2-Year Postdoctoral Research Award: 2-year awards of $70,000 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance are available to provide postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to generate new international and national collaborations with two co-supervisors from different institutions.

Koerner Postdoctoral Research Award The Koerner Postdoctoral Research Award is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to major challenges in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness and improving outcomes for those affected — now and in the future. The award supports prospective postdoctoral researchers and reflects an investment in the future generation of world-class researchers in mental health.

Postdoctoral Research Award: One 1-year award of $70,000 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance is available. womenmind™ Postdoctoral Research Award Funding stream not offered for this competition year. womenmind is a community of philanthropists, thought leaders and scientists dedicated to tackling gender disparities in science to put the unique needs and experiences of women at the forefront of mental health research.

Inspired and empowered by the work of CAMH, members of the womenmind community connect with and learn from each other while driving change for women’s mental health and women in science. The womenmind Postdoctoral Research Award provides support for postdoctoral researchers pursuing research to better understand, prevent and treat mental illnesses, with a focus on the mental health of women and/or girls.

This opportunity includes research involving sex and gender based analyses+ (SGBA+) and intersectionality (i.e., examining overlapping systems of discrimination or disadvantage) to improve the mental health of women and girls. One-year awards are available to support full-time postdoctoral studies under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist.

Postdoctoral Research Award: 1-year awards of $70,000 CAD stipend + $5,000 CAD research allowance will be available.

The CAMH Graduate Award is dedicated towards finding innovative solutions to major challenges in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness and reflects an investment in graduate trainees: highly qualified personnel working towards clinical discovery are vital for the innovation and growth of mental health research in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The objective of this competition is to provide graduate trainees with a comprehensive training program in the fields of mental health and/or substance use health, with practical training in research techniques. One-year awards are available to support internal and external applicants who are completing a full-time Masters or PhD program under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist.

Health Professional Awards Koerner Research Scholars is a competitive research program for health professional trainees. These awards are dedicated to providing health professional trainees with the opportunity to work with scientists to develop sound research methodologies, and to experience excellent mentorship while exploring mental health research across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

This program is open to all health professionals currently in a training program, at any stage of their chosen vocational program, including physicians, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers. Koerner Research Scholars are full-time 10-12 week placements under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist.

The CAMH Undergraduate Award is dedicated to providing undergraduate trainees with the opportunity to work with scientists to develop sound research methodologies and to experience excellent mentorship while exploring mental health research across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

The award reflects an investment in undergraduate trainees: Highly qualified personnel working towards clinical discovery are vital for the innovation and growth of mental health research in diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The CAMH Undergraduate Award provides support for undergraduate trainees applying concepts of research to better identify, diagnose, prevent and treat mental illnesses.

The objective of this competition is to provide undergraduate trainees with a comprehensive training program in the fields of mental health and/or substance-use health, with practical training in research techniques. Awards are for full-time 10-12 week placements under the primary supervision of a CAMH scientist.

The Koerner Travel Awards provide further support for research trainees applying research concepts to better identify, diagnose, prevent and treat mental illnesses. The objective of this competition is to provide trainees with support to present their research at an academic conference during their studies.

Trainee Spotlight Awardees Nicolette Stogios, Recipient of 2023 womenmind Postdoctoral Research Award, Postdoctoral Fellow at womenmind I am pursuing a PhD through the Institute of Medical Science at U of T.

My research is based out of the Schizophrenia Division at CAMH, under the supervision of Drs. Mahavir Agarwal and Margaret Hahn. I am interested in the complex interplay between antipsychotic medications, metabolic dysfunction and cognition.

I recently came in 2nd place in the Laidlaw Manuscript Competition at the Institute of Medical Science Scientific Day and the Annual Trainee Awards Competition at the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre Scientific Day for my retrospective chart review looking at the effectiveness of metformin in preventing clozapine-induced weight gain. This work was published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica in June 2022.

Ana-Paula Silva, Recipient of 2021 Discovery Fund Postdoctoral Research Award, 2022 womenmind Postdoctoral Research Award Fellowship A neuroscientist and an enthusiast of mental health! My current work investigates whether mitochondrial DNA variants are associated with structural brain changes in psychosis spectrum disorders.

My research interest is to address the gaps of how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to psychiatric disorders by surveying mitochondrial DNA variants with the ultimate goal of improving mitochondria-targeted therapies.

My advice to beginner research trainees is to find areas that you want to study, keep motivated by curiosity and a desire for understanding, stay open to learning different methods from those who are gracious enough to mentor you and/or do courses/attend workshops/conferences, and keep in mind both your short- and long-term career goals.

Justin Matheson, Recipient of 2023 womenmind Postdoctoral Research Award I have a passion for studying the complex relationship between sex, gender and cannabis use. I hope to one day establish an interdisciplinary lab to incorporate both social and biological methods to tease apart sex and gender influences on cannabis use and effects.

I recently published a scoping review of sex differences in the effects and pharmacokinetics of cannabidiol (CBD) along with my supervisor (Dr. Bernard Le Foll) and a graduate student in our lab (Zoe Bourgault). I had a great time writing this and I think it may be my favourite publication yet! (DOI: 10.

3390/biom12101462) Alina Patel, Recipient of 2023 Koerner Research Scholars Award I am a PhD student studying clinical psychology at CAMH and U of T. I am working with Dr. Lena Quilty, with my research focusing on the associations between repetitive negative thinking, depression and anxiety, and the use of digital mindfulness interventions to alleviate these symptoms.

I have just received the CAMH Koerner Studentship to continue this research. My advice to anyone just starting their research career is to remember the importance of work-life balance. It is important to work hard and persevere with a career in research, however, investing in aspects of life outside of work will increase fulfillment and ultimately lead to more productivity with research as well!

Kirsten Smith, Recipient of 2022 Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre Postdoctoral Research Award I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre, a practicing occupational therapist, and mom to a 10-year-old. My PhD work focused on the applications of mindfulness in paediatric rehabilitation and my current work explores the accessibility of mindfulness for people labelled with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Some recent successes include publication of three manuscripts and acceptance to present my work at the International Congress on Whole Person Care. For those newer to research, my advice would be to seek out mentorship from skilled and experienced researchers, the kind of people you want to be “when you grow up.
