Cancer and Smoking Disease Research Program: One-Year Program Grant Application - due February 2, 2026, 11:59 pm CT A portion of the generated revenue also funds the University of Nebraska Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases and the Cancer Registry at the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services.
The remaining funds are awarded to all campuses of the University of Nebraska and Creighton University which compete annually for the funds. In 1993, the Nebraska Legislature increased the tax on cigarettes and designated an additional two cents (2¢) per pack for cancer and smoking disease research.
The revenue from the two-cent program goes to the: University of Nebraska Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, and Other postsecondary educational institutions in Nebraska with colleges of medicine that have cancer research programs (Creighton University). The goal of the program is to build research capacity.

Networking2Save”: CDC’s National Network Approach to Preventing and Controlling Tobacco-related Cancers in Special Populations is sponsored by Department of Health And Human Services. The Office on Smoking and Health and Division of Cancer Prevention and Control seek to build on the progress of the previously funded networks and expand work to address tobacco-and cancer- related health disparities among populations particularly vulnerable to tobacco industry marketing tactics and with higher cancer incidence and death rates. To accelerate the decline in cigarette smoking, address other tobacco use, and reduce the burden of cancer disease and death among the entire population, it will be critical to continue to focus prevention and control efforts on those populations that are most vulnerable and harder to reach with general population interventions. The complex interaction of multiple factors (e.g. socioeconomic status, cultural characteristics, acculturation, stress) and persistent and targeted tobacco industry marketing to these vulnerable populations, contribute to tobacco related disparities. Many factors also contribute to cancer-related disparities such as socioeconomic status, cultural characteristics, diet, and access to healthcare services. This listing is currently active.
