PROFILE: Established in 1918, the Youngstown Foundation is a community foundation based in Youngstown, Ohio. Prominent local businessmen agreed to create the foundation in response to various community challenges taking place during that time. Foundation activities began with an initial $33,000 investment, and the first grant was awarded in 1920.

The foundation aims to “provide financial assistance to charitable, scientific and educational institutions that promote the mental, moral and physical wellbeing of the inhabitants of the city of Youngstown and vicinity.

” It funds local efforts for arts and culture, education, economic and community development, health, human services, and the environment, all with the goal of making Mahoning and Trumbull Counties “a more vibrant place for all people to thrive. ” Grants for K-12 Education, Community Development, and Arts and Culture The Youngstown Foundation serves as a catalyst to connect donors with community needs to make local improvements.

There are many funds held at the foundation, including the David T. Arrell Fund, Garlick Memorial Fund and the Crittenton Fund. It is the oldest and largest foundation in the region.

Each year, the funder awards approximately 150 grants. In recent years, the largest number of grants have gone towards education and youth needs, followed by social and family services and then comparable amounts to community development and arts and culture groups. Health, environment, women, and seniors receive the fewest number of grants.

Program Grants support a specific project or event. Operational Grants support operating expenses and overhead. Capital Investment Grants support improvements to physical spaces.

Crisis Assistance Program Grants provide emergency funding up to $5,000 to local nonprofits Support Fund Grants offer matching grants to modest-sized local charities. Past local grantees include Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley, Angels for Animals and the Bella Women’s Shelter.
