Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and Hydrogen Program - Alberta Innovates Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and Hydrogen Program The Clean Technology Program invests in projects to adapt, develop, and deploy innovative clean technologies to benefit Albertans and contribute to the growth of the province’s low-carbon economy. Program Status refers to the state of work going on within this particular program.

If the Program is 'Active', it is either accepting new applications or research is currently underway. If the Program is 'Inactive', the Program is neither accepting new applications nor is any research being conducted. Intake Status refers to the state of the Program's call for new applications.

If the Intake is displaying 'Open', the Program is accepting new applications. If the Intake is displaying 'Closed', the Program is not accepting new applications.

In each of the priority focus areas, we look for projects and activities that can reduce environmental impacts, support Alberta’s energy transition, generate jobs in a clean tech economy, and engage industry, researchers, and communities to participate in their future energy systems.

Carbon Capture, Utilization, Storage (CCUS) and Hydrogen are positioned to reduce emissions, diversify Alberta’s economy, and enable technologies that facilitate other clean technology focus areas. Specifically, CCUS and Hydrogen contributes to the decarbonization of energy systems, creates new end-use products, and achieves emissions reductions targets and net-zero goals.

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage We focus on advancing next-generation innovative solutions along the CCUS value chain that enable broad deployment of CCUS to help meet emission reduction targets cost-effectively. The scope covers capture, transport, storage, utilization, and direct air removal technologies.

We published the CCUS white paper, linked under ‘Resources’, focusing on technology innovation required for broad commercial-scale deployment of CCUS in Alberta. We focus on enabling the development of low carbon hydrogen technologies to support market growth in Alberta. This includes technologies along the entire value chain – including production, transportation, storage, and end use.

Priority will be given to hydrogen technologies that address key markets of mobility, power generation, residential and commercial heating, industry, and exports. We operate the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence which helps drive the development of a hydrogen economy in Alberta.

CCUS and Hydrogen - Continuous Intake Funding is open to all categories of lead applicant including technology developers, industry, industrial associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, research and development (R&D) organizations, post-secondary institutions, municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, government research labs, individuals and others, who are advancing technology development within a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) range of 3-7 .

Applicants are not required to be based in Alberta, but must demonstrate a clear value proposition for the Province and be able to clearly demonstrate alignment to the program area priorities. Wait for your Intake Form to be reviewed to determine if the proposed proejct will be invited to submit a Detailed Proposal. During the review process, Alberta Innovates leverages internal staff with subject-matter and business expertise and external reviewers to evaluate applications submitted.

Proposed projects will be evaluated against criteria in three major categories: Innovation; Execution; and Impacts. The considerations for each criterion are detailed in the SmartSimple online application form.
