Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards 2024 Carol R. Brown Awards In the tradition of the Creative Achievement Awards created by Carol Brown during her tenure as president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, two grants will be awarded -- one to an Established Artist and one to an Emerging Artist living and working in the southwestern Pennsylvania region.

The Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards are not project grants; rather, they are awards in recognition of exemplary artistic achievements and promise of future work. Congratulations to our 2024 Emerging and Established Artists!

Brown made to support individual artists in the region during her distinguished career in the arts. Brown has worked tirelessly to transform the cultural landscape of the region. As president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust from 1986-2001, she contributed to the cultural and economic revitalization of downtown Pittsburgh and the surrounding region.

In this and other leadership positions in the arts, she championed the contributions of creative artists. Under Brown, internationally renowned artists were commissioned to create major works of public art, and regional artists were recognized with the establishment of the Creative Achievement Awards program in 1991. The selection process began in October 2023 with a three-day open call in which 70 artists were nominated.

See a list of all finalists . Previous Brown Awards winners reviewed the nominees – Cameron Barnett and Sarika Goulatia for the Emerging artists, and Alisha Wormsley and Staycee Pearl for Established. A total of 25 candidates were invited to submit full proposals.

Arts administrators and practicing artists based in Pittsburgh and other cities reviewed those proposals and selected the two winners.

The panelists were: Dana Bishop-Root , director of education and public programs at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Dennis Robinson, Jr. , director of programs and partnerships at the Seattle Opera; Joseph Hall , co-executive director of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh; Liz Stookey Sunde , co-founder and executive director of the national nonprofit Music to Life based in Wilder, Vt.

; and Shikeith Cathey , an artist and filmmaker based in Philadelphia. Read the full news release .
