Certified Local Government (CLG) Grants

Certified Local Government (CLG) Grants is sponsored by Texas Historical Commission (through subgrants funded by Historic Preservation Fund of the National Park Service). The Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant Program provides funding to participating city and county governments to develop and sustain effective local preservation programs for historic resources.

Certified Local Government Grants | Texas Historical Commission We are currently accepting applications for FY2027 CLG grants. For details, see the How to Apply section. CLG grants provide funding to participating city and county governments to develop and sustain an effective local preservation program critical to preserving historic resources.

Activities eligible for CLG grant funding must be tied to the statewide comprehensive preservation planning process (a copy of the Texas Historical Commission Statewide Preservation Plan can be found here ) .

Priority for funding is given to projects that directly relate to the following work categories: Architectural, historical, and archeological surveys/inventories Preparation of nominations to the National Register of Historic Places Preparation of a local preservation plan Writing or amending a preservation ordinance Development of local design guidelines Research and development of a local preservation incentive program Travel/training expenses for hosting a regional preservation-related workshop CLG grants require a local match budgeted on a one-to-one (dollar for dollar) basis.

Projects using verifiable in-kind services or goods as a whole or partial match qualify, provided that the local match equals a 50:50 ratio for the project's total cost. Only non-federal monies may be used as a match, with the exception of Community Development Block Grants. Grants are paid as reimbursement of eligible expenses incurred during the project.

Cities and county governments that have been individually "certified" by the National Park Service as CLGs and are in good standing with the CLG Program are eligible to apply for CLG grants. Multiple CLGs may partner together to facilitate larger projects, such as public workshops or hiring a consultant to perform services for more than one communities.

CLGs may also sponsor a third-party organization (such as another unit of local government, a commercial firm, a non-profit entity, or educational institution) and delegate administration of a grant project to that organization. CLG grants are provided by the Texas Historical Commission annually through subgrants funded by Historic Preservation Fund of the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

At least ten percent of THC's annual allocation from the fund is set aside by THC for distribution solely to CLGs. Applications are reviewed through a competitive process by an interdisciplinary panel of agency staff based on specific criteria outlined in the application manual. Final award decisions are made by the Texas Historical Commission at the January quarterly meeting.

Grants typically range from $5,000 to $45,000. FY2027 CLG Grant Application Materials The FY2027 CLG grant application period is now open. Complete applications must be submitted by 5 p.

m. CST on Friday, November 6, 2026. The CLG Grant Program provides funding for preservation projects in CLG communities.
