Children of Veterans Tuition Grant

Children of Veterans Tuition Grant is sponsored by Michigan Department of Education. Tuition assistance for children of qualified Michigan veterans.

The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant provides undergraduate tuition assistance to students who are the natural or adopted child of a qualified Michigan veteran that has died or become totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected illness or injury, or missing in action (MIA), as a result of military service.

* Have been a legal resident of Michigan immediately before entering military service and did not later reside outside of Michigan for more than two years; or the veteran must have established legal residency in Michigan after entering military service.

* Have been killed in action or died from another cause while serving in a war or war condition in which the United States of America was or is participating; or, * Have died or became totally and permanently disabled as a result of a service-connected illness or injury as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; or, * Have been totally and permanently disabled as a result of a service-connected illness or injury prior to death and has now died; or, * Be listed as Missing in Action (MIA) in a foreign country as determined by the U.S. government.

* Complete an initial application (one time only). * Be the natural or adopted child of qualifying Michigan veteran. * Be older than 16 and less than 26 years of age.

* Not have been convicted of a felony involving an assault, physical injury, or death. * File a current-year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (required annually). * Not be in default on a Federal student loan.

* Be a Michigan resident for 12 months prior to program application. * If you are a dependent student, the contributor(s) on your FAFSA must also be a Michigan resident. * This will be confirmed based on your FAFSA.

* Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or approved refugee. * Possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. * Be an undergraduate student.

* Enroll at least half-time at a participating institution. * Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2. 25.

* Meet institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy. An application is required and can be completed through the MiSSG Student Portal. * 2026-27 Application Deadline: June 30, 2027 In addition to the CVTG application, the following documents must also be submitted: * Applicant’s (child’s) birth certificate (must list veteran's name).

* Veteran’s discharge certificate or separation document (DD Form 214). * Veteran’s death certificate or casualty report (if applicable). * Proof of total and permanent disability or death due to service-incurred causes.

Awards are based on the first Michigan college choice listed on the FAFSA. Students are responsible for notifying MI Student Aid of a change in their college choice. This can be done through the MiSSG Student Portal or by calling 888-447-2687.

In addition to the initial eligibility requirements, to renew, a student must: * File a current year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). * Maintain Michigan residency. * Be an undergraduate student.

* Enroll at least half-time at a participating institution. * Note: If you drop below the required enrollment levels, you should contact the financial aid office at your institution to discuss how your status change impacts your specific aid. * Have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.

25. * Meet institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Undergraduate students may receive scholarship assistance for up to four academic years which is counted as 8 semesters (does not have to be consecutive), or a total of up to $11,200; or they have reached age 26 (whichever comes first).

Future awards are subject to available and approved funding. ## Participating Institutions Michigan public degree-granting community college, public university; or Michigan private or independent, degree-granting non-profit institution. Awards are for an academic year with the amount determined by the student’s enrollment status.

* Full-time students can receive up to a maximum of $2,800 per academic year (up to $1,400 per semester). * Three-quarter time students can receive up to a maximum of $2,100 per academic year (up to $1,050 per semester). * Half-time students can receive up to a maximum of $1,400 per academic year (up to $700 per semester); or an amount equal to all of the student’s eligible tuition in that academic year, whichever is less.
