Children’s Fitness Fund - SAR – Southern Arizona Roadrunners Skip to content Children’s Fitness Fund In 1991, the Southern Arizona Roadrunners established the Children’s Fitness Fund to provide money for community endeavors that promote life-long fitness for children. The programs funded by SAR focus on the development of healthy lifestyles for children, with emphasis on running related activities.
SAR seeks to fund programs that prepare children for a lifetime of individual exercise, regardless of physical condition or ability. Each SAR race contributes approximately 10% of its profits to finance the Children’s Fitness Fund. The first round of proposals are due by September 1st, 2026 , in order to be reviewed by the SAR board at the September board meeting.
Programs may apply for $100-$2,000. Note that SAR does not approve funding for administrative costs. We will review applications on the second Monday of every month at our board meetings until this round of funding is used up.
Small grants ranging from $100 to $2,000 will be awarded to youth programs. Elementary, middle, and high schools that provide an organized running program (before, during, or after school) are eligible as well. All applicants must be an official 501(c)(3), school, parent booster club, PTA, or a similar entity.
Running clubs, events, or other organizations with 501(c)(3) designation are eligible to apply. No grants will be given to individuals under any circumstances. Funding cannot be used for “inherently religious activities” such as worship, prayer, or religious instruction.
Frame your program in terms of its social service impact on the community, rather than its religious motivation. School-funded sports teams are eligible to apply. Priority consideration will be given to proposals where underserved communities are impacted.
These proposals should demonstrate the financial needs of the program and what goal receiving the grant funds will help them accomplish. Supporting non-running activities such as bicycling, wrestling, children’s playground, hiking (examples) is acceptable, however, running is preferred. Proposals should emphasize the importance of running to their sport.
How To Submit Your Proposal The next application period will open in summer 2026. Proposals can be submitted using our online application . Guidelines After Receiving Funds Approval and distribution of funds will usually occur by mid-September each year.
The funding is contingent upon all essential factors in the proposal remaining the same (activity, site, beneficiaries, duration, etc.). SAR does not approve funding for administrative costs. A report must be sent to SAR after the funds have been used to highlight the benefits brought to the recipients.
If the funding is used incorrectly, future requests for funding will be rejected. Previous grant recipients may apply again; however, new applicants will be considered first. Questions: please email us.
