Enhancing communities with matching grants | CHS Inc. Cooperative matching grants Working together for a greater impact CHS Seeds for Stewardship program The CHS Seeds for Stewardship program matches cooperative contributions for projects in rural communities. In 2025, nearly $500,000 grants were awarded to more than 200 local communities.
Over 469 rural communities have received matching grants since 2020, like this partnership between Federated CO-op and CHS on the Kanabec County Veterans Memorial. CHS has partnered with dozens of member cooperatives to support local fire departments with projects ranging from grain bin safety equipment, fire truck replacements and more.
Dozens of FFA and 4-H projects have been supported through CHS Seeds for Stewardship ranging from greenhouses to leadership development events. Financial support from the CHS Seeds for Stewardship matching grants program helps local first responders handle grain-engulfment rescues. CHS has partnered with cooperatives to provide youth with lifesaving ag health and safety lessons at Progressive Ag Safety Days in rural communities.
Eric Graham and Blackfoot Challenge are using a CHS Seeds for Stewardship matching grant to help protect livestock and people from Montana’s growing grizzly bear population. Grant requests must be submitted by a member cooperative or CHS ag retail location. Grant requests received directly from a local organization are not accepted.

1 to Aug. 31 program year, each member cooperative can receive up to $10,000 in matching funds. Each CHS ag retail business unit can receive up to $7,500 in matching funds annually.
A minimum matching contribution of $1,000 and maximum of $10,000 will be considered. Member cooperatives are eligible to receive up to two grants per year. For instance, a cooperative might choose to designate $5,000 to a local FFA chapter and $5,000 to assist a local fire department.
Member cooperatives with multiple locations are only eligible to receive up to two grants per year on behalf of the entire organization, regardless of how many locations they have. How are applications evaluated? The Seeds for Stewardship competitive grant program supports requests that strengthen and uplift hometown communities.
Priority is given to requests that align with ag safety and farmer well-being, agriculture education and rural community vitality. Funds must be awarded to a 501c3 or related charity. Exceptions can be made for public schools and local safety initiatives.
For example, funds can be awarded to the school, a local government or related safety organization in those cases. Funds cannot be awarded directly to a cooperative, or a cooperative’s own corporate or related Foundation- regardless of charity status. Projects supported by cooperative matching grants in the past include grain bin safety equipment and training, local FFA and 4-H programs and food shelf donations.
Review of applications typically takes 8-10 weeks.
Seeds for Stewardship grants will likely not be awarded for: Individuals, individual needs or individual fundraisers Sports teams or athletic requests Medical/disease related causes Groups with religious affiliation or religious groups for religious activities Political campaigns, fundraisers or lobbying efforts Grants will be evaluated on a competitive basis and funds are not guaranteed.
Safety equipment primarily used by cooperative employees (i.e., high-visibility t-shirts, safety vests, harnesses, etc.) A cooperative's own expenses; a cooperatives private, corporate or related Foundation- regardless of charity status. CHS and the CHS Foundation support national, state and local projects.
