1M NIH Grant for Medical Imaging AI Education Indianapolis, IN — Dr. Saptarshi Purkayastha has been awarded a $1,103,193 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director for the project "CIMDAR-HIVE: Developing a Hive Learning and Datathon Supported Course on Imaging and Multimodal Data for Resource-Limited Institutions."
The three-year project (January 2025 - January 2028) aims to democratize education in medical imaging AI by creating accessible, high-quality training resources for institutions that may lack extensive computational resources or specialized faculty. Dr. Purkayastha serves as Multi-Principal Investigator (MPI) with a 12. 5% effort commitment.
CIMDAR-HIVE will develop innovative educational approaches including: Hive Learning Methodology: Collaborative, peer-supported learning environments that leverage collective intelligence Datathon-Based Training: Hands-on competitions using real-world medical imaging datasets Resource-Efficient Curricula: Courses designed to be delivered at institutions with limited computational infrastructure Multimodal Data Integration: Training on combining imaging data with clinical, genomic, and other health data sources Addressing Health Equity in AI Education The project specifically targets resource-limited institutions to address growing disparities in AI workforce development.
By providing accessible training pathways, CIMDAR-HIVE aims to ensure that the next generation of health informaticians comes from diverse backgrounds and institutions. This project represents a collaboration between Indiana University Indianapolis and partners at Emory University, building on established relationships in medical imaging AI research.
