CITRIS Seed Funding - CITRIS and the Banatao Institute CITRIS Seed Funding supports proof-of-concept work to address society’s greatest information technology challenges. Since 2008, this cornerstone platform within CITRIS has aligned the ingenuity of University of California innovators, emerging research topics and interdisciplinary collaboration for the benefit of society.
Seed funds are designed to support the groundwork, data collection and prototyping needed to pursue larger awards that address major unsolved challenges in the IT sector. Prior awardees have attracted significant funding from federal, state, private and philanthropic sources.

In 2020, CITRIS and the Banatao Institute supported 31 projects pursuing technology solutions to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing research in clinical care and therapeutics, contact tracing, data analytics and modeling, personal protective equipment, and testing.
From 2014–20, CITRIS and Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) collaborated on five rounds of seed funding, supporting a total of 16 international projects led by researchers at the University of California and ITESM.
