The City of Takoma Park’s City Façade Improvement Grant assists local businesses in repairing or improving their storefronts in order to encourage vibrant, welcoming commercial districts. City Façade Improvement Grants are funded through the Maryland Facade Improvement Program, part of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Division of Neighborhood Revitalization.
This fund has $100,000 allocated for FY27, split into two grand rounds. Grant funds must be spent and submitted for reimbursement within one year of execution of the grant agreement. Grants are reimbursable up to $10,000 per business for approved activities.
Eligible applicants are businesses that: Are located within the City of Takoma Park boundaries, with an ownership deed or a signed lease for at least three years for the property; are in Good Standing with the State of Maryland; are in compliance with all City, County, and State regulations, and; have a valid Use & Occupancy Certificate.

Applications will be accepted May 4 - June 8 . Interested business owners may apply online using the City Façade Improvement Grants Application on the City's grant portal. NOTE: Applicants will need to create an account to apply.
Applicants will need to provide two bids from licensed contractors or vendors for the proposed work and a rendering if the work involves new signage or other significant changes to the storefront beyond basic repair and replacement. Photos of the facade (before any work has been done) will need to be included for Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) review.
Note that the application will ask for the lease or deed, the business license or proof of nonprofit status, a Certificate of Good Standing from the State of Maryland, and a completed W-9 and City Vendor form. Businesses that rent rather than own their space must have the approval of the property owner before the grant application will be considered.

Grant funds may be used for façade improvements such as signage, awnings, windows, doors, exterior painting, murals, exterior lighting, or repair of the street-facing portion(s) of the structure. Award Determination and Process This grant is a competitive grant. Once the application period ends, applications will be reviewed by an internal panel of City Staff, and awardees will be notified in early July.
Grant funds must be spent and submitted for reimbursement one year after the grant agreement has been finalized. Expenses for approved façade improvement activities will be reimbursed up to $10,000 per business upon proof of completion and payment to the contractor or vendor.
