IP TAKE : This D. C. funder has very specific interests in mind for its grantmaking but is also an accessible foundation with several LOI deadlines per year.
Although Block hosts three distinct grants programs , application procedures are identical across all with the exception of deadlines. Block was a well-known political cartoonist who spent his career “fighting against abuses of the powerful. ” He ensured that this foundation was created to encourage editorial cartooning and to also support educational and charitable programs. The foundation is committed to “defending basic freedoms, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice and improving the condition of the poor and underprivileged.
” It funds local efforts for education, art, human services, poverty, basic freedoms and civic engagement through three programs: Defending Basic Freedoms , Pathways out of Poverty , and Encouraging Citizen Involvement .
Grants for Education, Arts and Culture, Community Development, and Democracy and Civic Engagement The Herb Block Foundation’s Defending Basic Freedoms grantmaking program seeks to “safeguard the basic freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights, to help eliminate all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and to assist government agencies to be more accountable to the public.
” Recent grantees include African Communities Together, Children’s Law Center and Project on Government Oversight. The Pathways out of Poverty grant program seeks to help “needy young people and adults gain a quality education” through programs for literacy education, GED preparation, after-school activities, increasing high school graduation rates, job placement and vocational training.
Recent grantees include Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, CollegeTracks and Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop. Encouraging Citizen Involvement grants seek “to help ensure a responsible, responsive democratic government through citizen involvement. ” Recent grantees include Adelante Mujeres, iCivics and the National Liberty Museum.
The foundation awards the Herblock Prize to encourage editorial cartooning. In addition to grants, the Foundation also awards the Herb Block Scholarship , a “last dollar” valued award at up to $8,000 per academic year not to exceed $16,000 over the life of the scholarship. This scholarship serves students who want to continue their studies at Washington, D.
C. area community colleges. Grants range between about $5,000 and $25,000.
In a recent year, this funder made $1. 76 million in total grants. Grantmaking largely focuses on the Washington, D.
C. metro area. The foundation names the greater Washington, DC region as the District of Columbia, the counties of Arlington, Fairfax and the city of Alexandria in Virginia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland.
