Clean Energy Internship Program for Employers | MassCEC Clean Energy Internship Program for Employers The Challenge: Prepare the Next Generation of Clean Energy Workers Massachusetts' growing clean energy industries need a robust, diverse, and equitable pipeline of talent to keep up with their work on decarbonization strategies and climate solutions.
About the Clean Energy Internship Program The Massachusetts Clean Energy Internship Program facilitates the placement of individuals currently enrolled or recently graduated from college, vocational-technical high schools, or training/certification programs into paid internships with verified clean energy companies across Massachusetts. The program offers stipends to interns to gain valuable workplace experience.
Since its launch in 2011, the program has allocated over $24 million to place nearly 7,000 interns at more than 700 unique companies. As a result of their internships, more than 1,100 interns have secured full-time or part-time jobs at their host companies. Students can learn how to participate here: MassCEC will be using a new platform for its Clean Energy Internship Program for fall 2026. This platform will be utilized by employers and interns and will help facilitate the Internship Program moving forward.
To participate in the program, employers must be clean energy or water innovation companies registered to do business in Massachusetts, with at least one office located in the Commonwealth. Be an eligible “clean energy employer,” which means an employer engaged in whole or in part in the sale or provision of goods and services relating to “clean energy” as defined in M. G.
L. c. 23J, § 1, provided that the determination of whether the Host Employer is a “clean energy employer” shall be made by MassCEC in its sole discretion.
New Set-Asides for Upcoming Sessions Starting with the Fall 2025 session, MassCEC is reserving some placements for participants in Gateway Cities or in Construction, Maintenance, and Installation positions.
MassCEC is reserving 40 year-round spaces for placements that fall under construction, maintenance, and installation categories, as defined below: High-Performance Building Sector Occupations (for retrofit and new construction): Electricians and Electrical Contractors with in building service upgrade, knob, and tube removal and/or heat pumps; Insulation Workers; Weatherization Crew Chiefs and Supervisors; Energy Auditors; HERS Raters; HVAC/R Technicians with heat pump expertise; Carpenters and Construction Laborers; Hazardous waste removal specialists (especially for asbestos and vermiculite removal); Building Operators/Maintenance Mechanics; Plumbers and Pipefitters; Customer Service Representatives.
Offshore Wind Occupations: Installation, Maintenance and Repair Workers; Structural Metal Fabricators and Fitters; Wind Turbine Service Technicians; Metal and Plastic Workers, Assemblers and Fabricators; Customer Service Representatives.
Net Zero Grid Occupations: Electricians and Electrical contractors specializing in solar, battery storage, grid upgrade, or time of use metering; Electric Power Line Installers and Repairers; Customer Service Representatives.
Clean Transportation Sector Occupations: Electricians and Electrical Contractors specializing in vehicle charging infrastructure; Automotive Technicians and Repairers with experience in electric vehicle maintenance or large vehicle retrofit; Logisticians and Fleet Managers; Customer Service Representatives. MassCEC is reserving 30 spots for students and/or employers located in Massachusetts Gateway Cities for Fall 2026.

The webinar reviewed how to register to create a new account on the new platform, post an internship, search candidates, submit candidates for eligibility to MassCEC, and submit a match request.
The Clean Energy Internship program offers three sessions per year for education students: Fall (September-December) Funding is allocated on a first-come/first-served basis until it runs out, or until the deadline for employers to submit signed offer letters to MassCEC has passed. Construction, Installation, and Maintenance placements operate on an annual schedule tied to the academic year.

Await approval of your account from MassCEC. All approved employers are eligible to participate in the program for a full year from the date of their application submission. Once your company has been approved for the program, you can submit new internship postings, which will be published once approved by MassCEC.
Select College Students or Construction, Installation, Maintenance Students as eligible applicants. Access the student dashboard to review candidates. If you have external candidates, they can submit intern applications here .
Every candidate must have a profile on the internship portal to participate in the program. Connect with Vocational High School Co-Op Coordinators in your area to identify candidates. Contact candidates from the student dashboard whom you are interested in and conduct in-person or phone interviews.
Click on "eligibility check" for the student(s) you'd like to hire. Once an eligibility check is processed, you will receive an automated email confirming that the intern has been approved and prompting you to submit a signed offer letter. Submit a co-signed offer letter that, at a minimum, states the intern's name, job title, expected date range of work, and hourly wage to internships@masscec.
com to receive funding. After funding has been reserved for the intern, you will receive an email confirmation. For vocational students, they will need the signature of their co-op coordinator on the offer letter.
CTI and After Dark students do not require a coordinator's signature. Any student who is under 18 and does not have access to a coordinator will need a parent or guardian signature. Sign and return your award letter.
After completion of the internship, submit your Reimbursement Package to ap@masscec. com . You must submit your fully completed reimbursement package before the session deadline.
