Climate-Smart Agriculture Program Apply for Climate-Smart Agriculture grants to support Aussie farmers The Australian Government is helping the agriculture sector respond to climate challenges through the $302. 1 million Climate-Smart Agriculture Program, funded through the Natural Heritage Trust.
The Climate-Smart Agriculture Program will support Australia’s agriculture sector to drive climate-smart, sustainable growth and protect Australia’s natural capital by funding best practice sustainable agriculture and natural resource management activities that support farmers to respond to the impacts of climate change.
The Program will help drive agricultural productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability by supporting farmers and the agricultural sector to: adopt climate-smart practices that reduce emissions and build resilience to climate change harness carbon and biodiversity incentives and implement industry sustainability frameworks adopt sustainable natural resource management practices that protect natural capital and biodiversity.
The program has multiple investment streams, including $45 million Partnerships & Innovation grants and $9 million Capacity Building grants that are now open.
Partnerships and Innovation grants of between $250,000 and $5 million can be used for a range of activities, from development of climate-smart technologies to improve farm efficiencies, decision support tools and smartphone applications, to new practices for sustainable grazing, cropping systems and pasture management.
Capacity Building grants of between $10,000 and $1 million are available for activities that enable farmers to access the latest climate-smart and sustainable agriculture approaches and inform decisions about their farming operations. 1 million over 5 years to 2027-28 for the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program, funded through the Natural Heritage Trust. The Natural Heritage Trust is the Australian Government’s key investment platform for achieving its natural resource management, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection outcomes.
This Climate-Smart Agriculture Program will fund a range of climate-smart, sustainable agriculture projects that support farmers and landholders to manage climate risks and invest in their on-farm natural capital and effective natural resources management. Two elements of the program that will help achieve this are the Capacity Building grants and Partnerships and Innovation grants.
Capacity Building grants and Partnerships and Innovation grants (Round 1) opened on 22 February 2024. Capacity Building Grants background The Capacity Building grants will provide up to $15 million in funding through 2 rounds of open–competitive grant opportunities for increased community capacity and capability for sustainable agriculture and natural resource management practices in Australia.
Round 1 provides up to $9 million over 4 years (2024-25 to 2027-28). This grant opportunity will support farmers to increase their awareness, knowledge and skills of best practice climate-smart sustainable agriculture approaches.
It will also increase the capacity and capability of community, Landcare groups, First Nations groups and organisations, and industry to assist farmers to adopt climate-smart and sustainable agriculture practices. A range of climate-smart, sustainable agriculture projects will be eligible.
Partnerships and Innovation Grants background Partnerships and Innovation grants will be comprised of up to 2 rounds of open, competitive grant opportunities with up to $45 million available over 4 years (2024-25 to 2027-28). This grant opportunity will support large scale projects to be delivered across Australia by consortiums.
The projects will develop, trial and implement new and innovative tools that lead to practice change and reduce pressure on Australia’s natural resources while increasing productive and profitable agriculture industries and systems.
The grant opportunity will help accelerate and support the adoption of climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices on-ground by funding projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon sequestration and build resilience in farming systems to the impacts of climate change.
Partnerships and Innovation projects will allow new ideas to be developed, tested and shared across farms, industries and regions, to the benefit of the Australian landscape, community and economy. A very brief introduction about the In Focus areas overall
