Veterans / Military - Cures Within Reach While Cures Within Reach is disease-agnostic and geography-agnostic, some funding partners have strategic interests in specific population groups.
Therefore, in addition to our disease-specific and geographic repurposing communities, we have a Veterans and Military Repurposing Community that utilizes the speed and cost-effectiveness of testing already approved therapies in new indications to improve the quality and length of life of retired military veterans and active US military.
We launched this on Veterans Day 2020 with our Clinical Repurposing for Veterans Initiative ( full press release here ). Our efforts include finding and funding clinical repurposing projects that address unmet and high priority medical needs of veterans and active military, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and brain injuries.
In Oct 2024, we approved 2 more veterans-focused clinical trials for funding: Using Fresh Frozen Plasma to Improve TBI Outcomes at University of California, Davis led by Dr. Rachel Russo Treating PTSD with Stellate Ganglion Block via TMS Neuromodulation at Providence VA Medical Center and Ocean State Research Institute led by Dr. Yosef Berlow Read our news release from August 14, 2024 here , describing the 2 veterans clinical trials selected from our 2023 RFP !
Funding Opportunity RFPs for Veterans / Military: Clinical Trials to Validate AI-Driven Drug Repurposing : now accepting submissions of investigator-initiated, proof of concept, Phase I or Phase IIA clinical trials to validate artificial intelligence (AI)-driven repurposing opportunities in any unsolved disease, where the therapies supported by AI models are already approved.
Eligible clinical repurposing trials must include AI-generated data as part of the preclinical support for the trial. Budget: up to $100,000, including a 10% institutional match, with additional funds available for community engagement. LOI deadline closed; submissions under review.
Any unsolved disease is eligible, although there is a preference for rare diseases. Both on- and off-patent drugs and biologics are eligible, although there is a preference for off-patent. Data from any AI model is eligible, although there is a preference for openly accessible models and for models developed by nonprofits/government.
Clinical Repurposing Research to Impact Veterans/Military 2026 : accepting budgets of up to $75,000 to a U.S.-based institution for a repurposing clinical trial in any disease area impacting veterans or active military, such as mental health, PTSD and brain injuries. LOI deadline closed; submissions under review.
Repurposing Research for Chicago 2026 : accepting budgets of up to $125,000 for clinical repurposing trials from Chicago area research institutions in one or both of the tracks listed below. LOI deadline closed; submissions under review. Track 1 – Investigator Groups : clinical repurposing trials in any unsolved disease led by an Early Stage Investigator or an underrepresented researcher.
Track 2 – Patient Groups : clinical repurposing trials impacting specific patient groups, such as health disparities, pediatrics, rare diseases and/or veterans issues (including mental health, PTSD and brain injuries).

This program supports investigator-initiated, proof-of-concept, Phase I or Phase IIA clinical trials to validate AI-driven repurposing opportunities for approved therapies in any unsolved disease. Eligible trials must include AI-generated data as part of the preclinical support.

AI-generated data must support the trial's preclinical foundation.
