COA Grants to Malacology

COA Grants to Malacology is sponsored by Conchologists of America. Grants are given to qualified individuals undertaking field or laboratory research on recent or fossil mollusks, and other molluscan-related projects. The program aims to support research in malacology.

org/grants/ The maximum award is US$2,500 - Degree-seeking students and others ( e.g. , postdocs, professors, undergraduates, museum researchers, highschool students, etc.) engag ed in any mollusk research are eligible. - Persons of any nationality and country of residence may apply. - Applicants from previous years may re-apply.

- Recipients of previous years may re-apply, but must include a submitted manuscript to or published article in American Conchologist based on the previous award. - Applications should be submitted via email as a pdf under 3 MB. - The proposal must concern a malacological topic , usually within biology or paleontology, with any molluscan taxon or taxa as the focus .

Every scientific discipline in which mollusks are studied is eligible, e.g., biogeography, phylogenetics, species discovery, genomics, paleontology, parasitology, biochemistry, morphology, etc. In the last five years, one funded grant (of about 70 total) focused on mollusks in literature, so a rare exception outside of the natural sciences may be made.

- The project should be self-contained and covered entirely by the funds requested or be a component of the applicant's overall research. If well-explained in the proposal, though, exceptions are possible. - Major p ermanent equipment is not an allowable expense.

However, t ime using a piece of permanent equipment (for example, SEM beam time) is allowable. - Institutional overhead is not permitted. - The maximum award is $2,500 US .

S maller amounts can be requested and may be more likely to receive funding. - Per diem costs for food during field work or travel can be included, but note that they should be lower than allowances permitted by the GSA (except in extraordinary cases): https://www. gsa.

gov/travel/plan-book/per-diem-rates - All recipients are expected to submit a summary of their work to American Conchologist within 12 months of receiving the award. - All applications are evaluated by the Academic Grants Committee composed of three professional malacologists appointed by the Chair of the COA Academic Grants program. - The decisions of the Committee are final.

Must include 3 components: a proposal (up to 2 pages) , budget (1 page) , and CV (1–2 pages) . abstract of project, not to exceed 150 words body including background information , its significance, materials and methods, and proposed plan of research, and illustrations ( if necessary ) single-spaced, 12 point font list of estimated expenses ; note that per diem food costs may not be funded in full.

A photo, age, religion, political preference or other personal details should be not included. Keep the introduction short and relevant.

The inclusion of preliminary data is helpful, when applicable. Also, in the last few years, most successful proposals were partially funded at 70–90% of their proposed budget. Applications are judged by the COA Grants Committee.
