Minister Byrne announces Communicating Europe Initiative grants Minister Byrne announces Communicating Europe Initiative grants From: Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Published on: 5 August 2025 Last updated on: 5 August 2025 The Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, has today announced the successful applicants under the 2025 Communicating Europe Initiative.
A total of 66 projects across Ireland have been approved for funding, with a combined allocation of €345,500. The Communicating Europe Initiative supports voluntary organisations, educational bodies, civil society groups and Local Authorities in raising awareness about the European Union and Ireland’s place within it.
The Communicating Europe Initiative promotes public engagement with EU issues through a wide range of events, educational activities and outreach campaigns. Speaking today, Minister Byrne said: “I am delighted to confirm the successful projects under the 2025 round of the Communicating Europe Initiative. The level of interest this year has been exceptional, with a large number of applications received.
The selected projects reflect a strong commitment to promoting understanding of the European Union in communities across Ireland. This year, the funding available under the Communicating Europe Initiative has been increased, amounting to €250,000 for civil society and voluntary bodies, and €150,000 for Local Authorities.
The increased funding is a reflection of the government’s continued priority to support an open dialogue on Ireland’s EU membership and to encourage public participation in European affairs. ” The CEI 2025 call for proposals was launched on 19 March 2025 by Minister Byrne. The original deadline of 17 April was extended to 22 April to allow for broader participation.
An independent Evaluation Committee, comprising officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the European Commission Representation in Ireland, and the European Parliament Liaison Office, met on 29 April to review and assess the applications. A total of 59 projects from civil society and voluntary organisations have been approved, along with 7 projects from Local Authorities.
In some cases, funding was approved at a reduced level based on the Committee’s assessment. A reserve remains available to support additional initiatives that may arise during the remainder of 2025. A full list of successful projects is attached in the annex.
