Community Action Grants Program (Local Journalism Fund) is sponsored by Silicon Valley Community Foundation. This program addresses gaps in news and information in underserved communities by supporting hyper-local coverage. Grants prioritize local nonprofits working on accurate and inspiring community stories designed to inform, engage, and activate residents to strengthen democracy.

14, 2025 – In 2024 Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) supported 115 nonprofits in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties through its Community Action Grants program, which provides funding to local organizations working with communities that have historically faced discrimination and lack of access to resources.

Local nonprofits working in arts and culture, environmental protection, faith-based initiatives, local journalism, health services, and movement and power-building activities received grants from SVCF.

“Every day, I see the remarkable dedication of organizations working tirelessly in our neighborhoods – not only helping families meet their basic needs, like putting food on their tables, but also empowering them to have a voice and agency over the policies and decisions that shape their lives,” said Nicole Taylor, president and CEO of SVCF.

“These vital organizations, deeply connected to their communities and creating lasting change, often lack sufficient philanthropic funding, which is why we are committed to amplifying their efforts and helping ensure they have the resources to carry out their missions.

” Some of the organizations that received grants include: Youth Utilizing Power and Praise , an organization working to build youth empowerment and self-esteem, by providing access to supportive activities and services through performing arts, fine arts, sports, mentorship and entrepreneurship.

Rise South City , an organization aiming to create a new center of gravity in the climate movement by uniting frontline communities, allies and organizations toward resilient, regenerative and equitable neighborhoods. Coastside Hope , an organization providing necessities like food, clothing, housing assistance, online application for government benefits, referrals and other support when neighbors need it most.

California Press Foundation , an organization aiming to enrich and grow California’s news gathering ecosystem by encouraging inclusivity, collaboration and the ongoing support of quality journalism education. The community foundation awarded $4. 6 million to 115 organizations through its Community Action Grants program.

The Community Action Grants program reflects SVCF’s strategy of supporting organizations that serve communities facing the greatest barriers to social and economic opportunities in Silicon Valley. Aligned with SVCF’s intent to provide funding for organizations that typically do not have access to grants from large philanthropic institutions, the nonprofits funded under this program all have budgets of $3 million or less.
