Applications open for direct beneficiary grants on restoration under the AFR100 Support Programme Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism Applications open for direct beneficiary grants on restoration under the AFR100 Support Programme The AFR100 Support Programme, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and led by FAO with partners, continues to advance implementation with the opening of calls for applications for Direct Beneficiary Grants (DBGs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Togo and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The grants aim to support locally led forest and landscape restoration (FLR) action and restoration-based value-added innovation, helping communities restore degraded landscapes while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The programme provides direct financial and technical assistance to local communities, smallholder forest and farm producer organizations, and local enterprises to scale up restoration efforts and strengthen local economies.
Eligible geographic areas Applicants must operate within one of the programme’s target landscapes: Kerio Valley Landscape – Kenya Western Plateaux Region – Togo Lubumbashi Area – Democratic Republic of the Congo Monduli–Karatu Landscape – United Republic of Tanzania Eligible applicants include: Forest and Farm Producer Organizations (FFPOs), including associations and cooperatives Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) and community-based organizations Other local organizations active in forest and landscape restoration and compatible restoration-related value chains Selected applicants may receive grants ranging from the equivalent of USD 5 000 to USD 50 000 , depending on the proposed intervention and country arrangements.
Funding can support a wide range of restoration and livelihood activities, including: Restoration interventions Tree planting, enrichment planting and assisted natural regeneration Establishment or expansion of agroforestry systems Soil and water conservation measures, including terracing, trenches and erosion control Rehabilitation or establishment of community nurseries Livelihood activities supporting restoration Restoration-compatible livelihood diversification, such as beekeeping, fodder production and fuel-efficient technologies Biodiversity conservation Community-led biodiversity conservation initiatives Infrastructure and equipment supporting restoration Preparatory measures linked to restoration, including water management, soil preparation and production of organic inputs This milestone builds on strong engagement already seen in Malawi and Madagascar, where national calls have already attracted more than 200 applications, demonstrating growing interest in restoration opportunities and locally driven action.
