Community Projects Grant

Community Projects Grant is sponsored by Henry County Master Gardeners Extension Volunteers (HCMGEV). This grant supports schools, nonprofit groups, or community-based organizations in Henry County for gardening and environmental projects that educate and engage youth and adults in sustainable gardening, horticulture, and environmental stewardship.

Grants | Henry County Master ● Who Can Apply? Schools, nonprofit groups, or community-based organizations located in Henry County. - If your group isn’t officially registered in Georgia, you’ll need a Fiscal Sponsor (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or public institution) to receive funds on your behalf.

● Where Does It Need To Be? The project must take place in Henry County. ● Who Else Is Involved?

An active Henry County Master Gardener must be engaged in the project. If you don’t know a member of HCMGEV, we’ll connect you with one of our great volunteers!

Another active Henry County Master Gardener must be engaged in the project. ​ Grants Designed to Boost Gardening and Environmental Projects in Henry County “Both the Community Projects Grant and the Green Henry Grant are powerful tools for cultivating a sense of community, health, and respect for the environment,” says HCMGEV President Dawn Washington.

HCMG provides many opportunities throughout the year to promote gardening and education to the community, including an MG Sprouts program, which teaches gardening to children aged 6-9, an Arbor Day tree giveaway, annual Spring and Fall plant sales and maintaining the Gardens at Nolan House in Heritage Park. These new grant opportunities are a way for the organization to do more.

“Whether you’re starting a garden in a local school to teach kids about where their food comes from or beautifying a public space with pollinator-friendly plants, these grants encourage everyone to dig in (quite literally!) and make Henry County a greener, healthier place to live. ” The grants are funded through plant sales and donations from members.

Grant applications are accepted from February through August and reviewed on a rolling basis. Grants are non-competitive and awarded based on project merit and availability of funds.

2025 Grant Recipients and Projects ● Imagine the View Preparatory School in McDonough Students at Imagine the View Preparatory engaged in hands-on STEM learning through innovative sustainable gardening projects, including building and planting two raised beds and designing a hydroponics system.

They explored the plant life cycle and compared the effectiveness of soil-based and hydroponic methods as sustainable approaches for growing food. ● Hidden Valley Senior Center in Stockbridge ​ Master Gardeners and other volunteers planted pollinator friendly plants to help beautify the grounds of the senior center. Education was made available to seniors about how they could grow similar plants at their homes.

● Veterans Museum at Heritage Park in McDonough: Master Gardeners planted a red, white and blue Patriot Garden to honor our veterans and for visitors to enjoy, The garden includes perennials to attract pollinators to the area along with new shrubbery. The new garden is visually appealing and enhances the beauty of the museum and park.

● Southern Crescent Baptist Church in McDonough Master Gardeners and church volunteers prepared two large garden beds for planting by amending the existing soil with new topsoil and organic matter, then planted shrubs and native pollinator friendly flowering plants. The updated beds brighten the church entrance area. Additional plants will be added over time for seasonal blooms and color.
