The OpenAI Foundation's People-First AI Fund provides unrestricted grants to U.S.-based nonprofit and community organizations to strengthen civil society in the age of AI. The fund focuses on three areas: Community Support Services, Community Arts & Cultural Organizations, and Community Journalism & Media. Its inaugural round delivered approximately $40.5 million in unrestricted grants to 208 nonprofits across the United States, with an additional $9.5 million in board-directed grants, for a $50 million total commitment. Grants are unrestricted, allowing recipients to apply funds where they are most needed. Future rounds are anticipated.
The GitLab Foundation's AI for Economic Opportunity Fund, run in partnership with OpenAI, awards demonstration grants to nonprofits using AI to measurably improve income growth and economic mobility for low-income populations worldwide. Selected organizations receive $250,000 in catalytic funding to prototype and demonstrate progress, six months of cohort-based technical support from OpenAI engineers and advisors, API credits, mentorship, and eligibility for scaling grants from partner philanthropies.
