Computers for Learning is sponsored by Federal Government (via General Services Administration). Through its Computers for Learning program, the federal government places surplus computers in schools and educational institutions. While not a monetary grant in the traditional sense, it provides valuable resources for computer science education and infrastructure.

Exposure to computers throughout school helps prepare them for future opportunities in an increasingly technological society. However, for some school districts, it is difficult to afford computers for their students. To help get computers in the hands of schools and students, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) sponsors the Computers for Learning (CFL) program.

CFL is a program through which federal agencies can transfer excess computers and peripheral equipment directly to schools and educational nonprofit organizations to support education for children, pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The program’s ambitious goal is to make modern computer technology an integral part of every classroom so that every child has the opportunity to be educated to their full potential.

The equipment provided through the program is free; however, schools are responsible for packing and shipping costs. GSA’s New England Region currently has over 70 computers available for eligible schools through the CFL program. Interested schools and educational non-profits organizations are encouraged to find more information on this program at the Computers for Learning website .

“Computers for Learning is a win-win for the federal government and, most importantly, the children who will directly benefit from use of this technology,” Francis Thomas, Regional Administrator for the New England, Northeast and Caribbean Regions , said. “GSA is pleased to be able to donate these laptops and related equipment to schools here in New England as they constantly seek to improve educational opportunities for all students.

” In addition to the benefits to schools and students, the CFL program is good for the environment. The program reduces landfill disposal of electronic waste. Donating or recycling consumer electronics conserves natural resources and avoids air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing new materials.

“I urge eligible schools and nonprofits across New England to learn more about how Computer for Learning can make a difference in their classrooms,” Thomas added.
