Our resources cover healthy aging, dementia support, technology access and social connection. Together, these efforts help build a Tempe that is welcoming and accessible for everyone, at every stage of life. The City of Tempe is honored to partner with the World Health Organization, through AARP Arizona, to be recognized as an Age-Friendly Community.
The City received this designation in November 2022. The World Health Organization defines the age-friendly cities concept as a local response to encouraging active aging by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security. Their eight interconnected domains guided Tempe's efforts to identify and address barriers to the well-being and participation of older adults.

The City of Tempe's Community Health and Human Services is pleased to support and lead the implementation of the 2026–2030 Age-Friendly Tempe Action Plan. In alignment with the principles of an Age-Friendly Community, the City remains committed to serving the diverse needs of our community and supporting the health, vibrancy and livability of Tempe for all ages.
Age-Friendly Presents is a free education series offering practical tools and helpful resources for older adults, caregivers and community members touched by dementia. Each session explores a different topic affecting older adults and those living with dementia. In 2016, the City of Tempe became the first city in Arizona and fifth city in the country to become a designated Dementia Friendly community.
The City launched Dementia Friendly Tempe in partnership with the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute to make Tempe a livable place for people with dementia and their caregivers through ongoing education, programs, activities and resources. Dementia Friendly Tempe provides programs and services to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their caregivers, including the Memory Café and the annual Dementia Tempe Summit.
Memory Café provides a social and resource space for people living with memory loss and their care partners. Caregivers participate in an educational and/or support session while people with memory loss actively participate in a cognitive engagement program. Join us in-person on Mondays each month (closed major holidays).
Doors open at 9:30 a. m. for coffee, treats and time to connect with friends.
Programs for caregivers and their loved ones are hosted from 10 - 11:15 a. m. Memory Café is held at the Tempe Public Library (3500 S.
Rural Road) in the Ironwood and Desert Willow rooms. Each fall, Age-Friendly Tempe hosts the annual Dementia Tempe Summit — a free opportunity for caregivers, community members and professionals to come together to learn, connect and grow. We're excited to share that this year's summit will be held on Friday, Oct.
23, from 10 a. m. - 2 p.
m. , at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Join us for the 10th Annual Dementia Tempe Summit focused around the theme _Together We Thrive: Celebrating Connection, Care and Community.
_ This milestone year, we're celebrating a decade of bringing together caregivers, families and community partners in support of those navigating dementia. Whether you're caring for a loved one or seeking answers for yourself, this free event offers a welcoming space to connect, learn and find hope.
Explore a resource fair featuring local organizations and services, hear from guest speakers and take part in an educational session designed to support you on your journey. You don't have to navigate this alone. Join us for a day built around connection, care and community.
**Full agenda, registration link, and speaker lineup coming soon. Check back for updates! ** Dementia & Age-Friendly Park As part of the 2026–2030 Age-Friendly Action Plan, the City of Tempe is committed to developing a Dementia and Age-Friendly (D&AF) Park within the City of Tempe.
The D&AF Park will be a dedicated space for older adults, including secure fencing, looped walking paths, ADA-compliant restroom and parking. As the park nears development, the City will communicate and share more details. Age-Friendly Tempe is always looking for volunteers to support our programs and community.
Volunteer opportunities are available at Memory Café and with Connect Tempe.
