Cribs for Kids™ Program is a grant from the Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) that funds community-level interventions to expand safe sleep education and resources for vulnerable caregivers across Ohio. The purpose of this RFGA is to solicit Applications from qualified organizations to implement the Cribs for Kids™ Program (Program). This Program is intended to expand access to safe sleep education and safe sleep resources for vulnerable Caregivers across Ohio, with the overarching goal of reducing preventable infant deaths and improving infant health outcomes.
Through this Program, subgrant awards will support community-level interventions that address unsafe sleep practices and environments, which are a known contributor to preventable infant mortality. DCY will provide Safe Sleep Kits at no cost to support Program implementation, and funded Grantees will facilitate the distribution of these kits to Caregivers as part of comprehensive, evidence-informed service delivery.
Program activities are expected to focus on reducing sleep-related infant deaths through education, facilitated resource distribution, and follow-up support.
Program activities shall include, at a minimum: Providing standardized safe sleep education to Caregivers Distributing Safe Sleep Kits, including portable cribs, to Caregivers who lack a safe sleep environment Conducting required follow-up activities to reinforce education and support sustained safe sleep practices Collecting and reporting standardized safe sleep data as required by DCY.
This Program directly supports DCY’s strategic goal of ensuring more infants reach their first birthday. Infant mortality, defined as the death of a child before one year of age, is a key indicator of infant health and overall community well-being. In 2023, Ohio’s infant mortality rate was 7.
1 deaths per 1,000 live births, which exceeded the state target rate of 6. 0 deaths per 1,000 live births. This disparity highlights the continued need for targeted, locally driven interventions to address preventable risk factors.
Sleep-related infant deaths, including those caused by asphyxia due to unsafe sleep practices, remain largely preventable and disproportionately affect underserved and high-risk populations.
By equipping Caregivers with both the knowledge and tangible resources needed to establish and maintain safe sleep environments, the Cribs for Kids™ Program seeks to reduce preventable infant deaths and improve health outcomes for infants throughout Ohio. More Informationhttps://ohdcy. my.
