This compendium of Austrian literature in translation offers English-language readers their first comprehensive introduction to some of Vienna’s finest but overlooked writers from the early twentieth century, a selection including Vicki Baum, Maria Leitner, Mela Hartwig, Maria Lazar, Veza Canetti, Lili Gru¨n, and Hilde Spiel, among others.

Preceding the volume’s essays and excerpts, a lengthy introduction situates readers within the heady context of interwar Vienna’s social experiments—experiments that have not been invalidated by the fact that we know the period ended in a National Socialist takeover.

This anthology will provide a much-needed, even urgent corrective to the simplified view of early twentieth century Austrian culture, society and history that has become dominant. It will restore the complex, vibrant fabric of interwoven views and voices that has faded into uniformity.

I am applying for a Chairman’s Award, with the purpose of completing a significant book manuscript, Founding Statesman: John Jay and the Creation of the United States.

Jay was an indispensable figure in the founding of the U.S., serving as President of Congress, Diplomat to Spain, Negotiator of the 1783 Paris Peace Treaty, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Special Minister to Great Britain, and Governor of New York.

Jay’s story is vitally important for understanding the American Founding, and with the 250th anniversary of independence on the horizon a new biography will make an important contribution at a time when citizens are increasingly interested in the Founding era. The grant will last six months, January-June 2026. The funds would allow for the course release and time necessary to complete the manuscript.

The result of the grant would be to have a finalized manuscript ready to submit to a press at the end of the granting period. American federalism is often considered the revolutionary generation’s unique contribution to democratic theory and practice.

Today, more than half the world’s population lives in some kind of federal system. Nearly 250 years ago, the idea of dividing sovereignty across different tiers of government was viewed as radical, even impossible. The American Revolution gave rise to a profound rethinking of political power, and it culminated in a new form of government, what Madison called “The Compound Republic.

” Highly imperfect, and vigorously debated, it was accepted on the assumption that it would secure a few key advantages: checking centralized power, keeping government close to the people, and accommodating diversity in a pluralistic society.

This book project traces the intellectual and constitutional history of these ideals and explains the surprising persistence of the federal idea in the United States, despite recurring—and often overstated—claims of its demise. Society of Sisters (1925), the United States Supreme Court declared that there is an unenumerated but judicially enforceable constitutional right for parents to “direct the upbringing and education” of their children.

The justices asserted that there is a long history of jurists and lawmakers respecting this right in the Anglo-American tradition, but they did not offer much evidence to support this claim. A few scholars have touched on this history of this right in America, but none have done so in a comprehensive manner. I propose to write a 45,000-word law review article providing a great deal of evidence to support these justices’ claim.

I’ll pay special attention to the founders’ views on this subject because they created America’s constitutional order, the very order under which we still live. The question of what makes an American citizen is perhaps more important now than ever before.

While modern debates center legal citizenship, these debates neglect the social and interpersonal dimensions of citizenship that have long provided the bedrock for American society.

To refocus the conversation on citizenship and provide a theoretical grounding for this facet of citizenship in early American history, this project examines the writings of four women, Abigail Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Judith Sargent Murray, and Phillis Wheatley, as important contributions to the political thought of the American Founding.

This project focuses on how, by merit of their social roles as women, the writings of Adams, Warren, Murray, and Wheatley reveal new ways of conceptualizing American citizenship—namely, that complete citizenship requires not only legal grounding, but also community-based belonging, civic virtue, participation in collective memory, and commitment to social duties.

I intend to write a scholarly book on George Washington's understanding of the role of honor in politics. The work is projected to include the following chapters: 1) An introduction, making the case for the study of honor. 2) A chapter on Washington's understanding of honor as an inducement to, and as a guide in conducting oneself in, offices of high political responsibility.

3) A chapter on honor and the office of the presidency. 4) A chapter on national honor and dignity. 5)A chapter on the honor due to God, or on the role of religion in politics.

6) A conclusion on the challenges of honoring Washington today, in view of recent criticisms of him and the Founders more generally for their role in injustices such as slavery. The Bible is an important, yet understudied, source of influence on the American founders that must be studied alongside other intellectual influences, such as British constitutionalism, Enlightenment liberalism, and classical and civic republicanism, if one wants to understand the broad range of ideas that informed the founding generation's political thought and practice.

This grant will be used to research and write several chapters that will be added to a revised and expanded edition of my book, Reading the Bible with the Founding Fathers (Oxford University Press). The chapters will explore biblical influences on the founders' views of human nature and on the American constitutional tradition and the diverse uses of the Bible in the political rhetoric of the founding era.

Secondary authors often fail to place The Federalist back in its dramatic context: both with regard to debates over ratification and in response to Anti-federalist arguments critical of the Constitution. The Anti-federalists, firing the first shots, prompted Publius’ informed essays, and that back-and-forth provides the framework for my interpretation of The Federalist.

The proposed work accomplishes two things: it provides readers with an essay by essay analysis of all 85 Federalist Papers, and it deepens the readers’ sense of the historical context and debates surrounding adoption of the Constitution. Only by placing The Federalist in its dramatic context can we properly understand the underlying issues that resonate in American politics to this day.

One chapter examines the American Revolution in its trans-continental context, followed by chapters examining major shifts in moral argument and their relationship to American military strategies from the Civil War to the War on Terror. A conclusion restates the major claim—that moral reasoning precedes and directly shapes policy and strategy—and emphasizes that moral considerations operate to direct combat actions.

This project explores the historical and literary relationship between religious liberty, liberal education, and American civil rights in the long 19th century; it seeks to recover the history of a transatlantic network of black and white humanists who developed political and literary initiatives to rally opposition to slavery and propagate the ethics of a free society.

Letters from Mechelen is a true account of a prominent Jewish family’s escape from Germany during the Holocaust. Prior to World War II, Löwensohn-Verlag, located in Fürth, Bavaria, was the largest children’s book publisher in Germany. By 1937, however, with Jews prohibited from the publishing industry, owner Gustav Löwensohn was forced to sell the company, worth three-quarters of a million Reichsmarks.

The Löwensohn family fled with almost nothing, escaping to Holland and Belgium, where they hid in attics and basements. Ultimately, the family isolated themselves in rural Belgium until 1945. After WW II, they immigrated to Kansas City, MO, and became US naturalized citizens.

Unfortunately, even carrying counterfeit identification, Grandfather Gustav was suddenly arrested in Brussels in 1942, and taken to the Mechelen transit camp (Kazerne Dossin) in Belgium, where a year later, he was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and executed.
