Our priority programme areas for 2025 are: Nine transformative programs working across data, models, openness, and accountability. AI should work for everyone, in every language. But today, many languages remain underrepresented in the data and tools that power AI — limiting the reach, reliability and relevance of these technologies.
Our Linguistic Diversity Initiative will help close that gap by expanding AI’s language capabilities through the development of datasets, models, and applications for underrepresented languages. The goal is to make AI more inclusive, more useful, and more reflective of the world it serves. AI has the potential to transform healthcare.
Unlocking that potential means focusing on the foundations — validating data, strengthening health systems, and meaningfully involving communities from the start. Our Health and Human Welfare Initiative will support real-world evaluations to understand how AI is affecting people and communities in practice.
It will also invest in the technical and community infrastructure needed to ensure that AI is safe, reliable, and beneficial for every patient, everywhere. Accountability shouldn’t be optional. Yet shared standards and scalable infrastructure are still lacking, making meaningful oversight more difficult.
Our Audit and Accountability Initiative is changing that. By bringing together diverse voices across sectors and regions, we’re working to develop practical tools, global standards, and governance models that enable fair, transparent, and trustworthy AI. Current AI is an international initiative launched at the AI Action Summit in Paris with an initial $400 million investment, led by France and a broad array of government, philanthropic, and tech industry partners including Google and Salesforce. MacArthur Foundation is among the philanthropic backers. The initiative aims to raise $2.5 billion over five years to fund open, accountable, and purpose-driven AI that prioritizes transparency, fairness, and global equity. Funding focuses on three key pillars: Data (expanding access to high-value, locally relevant datasets in healthcare, media, and education), Openness (promoting open standards and tools ensuring AI technologies remain accessible, adaptable, and inclusive), and Accountability (establishing robust frameworks for transparency, auditing, and public oversight to ensure AI systems serve the public interest). Current AI seeks to prevent AI harms while harnessing its benefits, with a particular emphasis on ensuring AI development does not concentrate power among a small number of developers. This is distinct from the Humanity AI initiative, which is a separate U.S.-based philanthropic coalition.
Current AI is the most heavily capitalised attempt yet to build what it calls a public option for AI, and its structure is different enough from a conventional foundation that it changes how you should approach it. Launched at the Paris AI Action Summit as a global non-profit partnership bridging government, philanthropy and the technology sector, it opened with over $400 million committed and a stated goal of mobilising $2.5 billion over five years, led by France with partners including Google and Salesforce. Its work divides into three pillars, and knowing which one a project fits determines whether there is any path in. Fund supports changemakers building AI tools with and for local communities, with an explicit emphasis on transparency and community ownership - this is the grantmaking pillar and the entry point for most nonprofits, civil society organisations and research institutes. Build develops the full stack of public interest AI from hardware to applications, with components required to be open, accessible and auditable, which favours organisations able to contribute infrastructure rather than end-user services. Bridge creates collaboration infrastructure and shared resources to connect the global public interest AI movement, and is the natural home for convening, standards and coordination work. The critical practical caveat is that Current AI does not operate on a published open-call cycle the way a traditional foundation does. Its website sets out the pillars and the overall commitment but does not specify open calls for 2026, individual grant sizes, eligibility criteria or application deadlines, and much of its deployment to date has been through partnership and direct engagement rather than competitive solicitation. Organisations should treat this as relationship-driven funding: identify which pillar the work sits in, make contact through Current AI's official channels, and monitor announcements for any structured call. The initiative's international framing means non-US and Global South organisations are squarely in scope, which distinguishes it from most large AI philanthropy.
NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program is a grant from NVIDIA providing up to $60,000 per award to PhD students conducting research that advances accelerated computing and its applications. Now in its 25th year, the program invites nominations from doctoral students pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and related fields. Recipients receive not only research funding but also access to NVIDIA technology, products, and engineering expertise, along with a mandatory in-person summer internship. Students are nominated by their faculty advisors and selected based on academic achievement and research area alignment.
