This fellowship opportunity supports research to develop a system that models and supports human decision-making during critical, ethics-laden situations, particularly in military contexts. The project aims to create an interactive "ethical advisor" software that assists military personnel by identifying ethical dilemmas and providing decision-making interventions.
The research focuses on combining behavioral data and computational modeling to emphasize the human element in decision processes. The long-term goal is to inform the design of fully autonomous systems that reflect U.S. Air Force moral and ethical values, ensuring autonomous AI systems make decisions aligned with these principles.
The project involves collaboration with the Air Force Academy and Air University and includes developing realistic ethical scenarios involving AI agents and military personnel. The research will proceed in phases over 2-3 years: Year 1: Define psychological and situational factors influencing ethical dilemmas; develop realistic scenarios.
Year 2: Build and test the Ethical Advisor prototype; refine scenarios; establish collaborations across commands. Year 3: Integrate and test the model and Ethical Advisor in mission systems; conduct joint war game testing. Applicants with backgrounds in psychology, philosophy, computer science, or related fields with experience in data gathering, programming, and testing are encouraged to apply.
