AD-related dementias include Lewy body dementia (LBD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), vascular cognitive impairment/dementia (VCI/D), and mixed dementias. This NOFO supports exploratory and developmental grant (R21) applications focused on uncovering novel mechanisms underlying RNA modification-mediated processes and their impact on brain aging and the pathogenesis of AD/ADRD.
Proposed studies should focus on functional characterization and mechanistic investigation of previously identified RNA modifications. https://grants. nih.

The National Institute on Aging's FY 2026 AD/ADRD portfolio consolidates the dementia research infrastructure layer — NCRAD, NACC, the new AI and Technology Collaboratory Coordinating Center — into a small number of large, often single-source cooperative agreements. The $113M new-research increment goes elsewhere. For investigators submitting in FY 2026, the structural change matters more than the headline dollar number.
