Tanzania Challenge Fund - Data & evidence to end extreme poverty DEEP Challenge Fund: Tanzania Our Tanzania Challenge Fund awards grants to local researchers focused on reducing poverty. Despite recent economic growth in Tanzania, severe poverty remains a persistent issue. With most people in poverty living in rural areas, Tanzania now also has one of the world’s highest rates of urbanisation.

And it is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Evidence-based policy choices are vital to help address all of these challenges. For this reason, Tanzania was the first country to be selected for the DEEP Challenge Fund.

We began awarding grants to local researchers through the fund in 2024. Locally led to increase impact As with all of our Challenge Funds, our aim is to support innovative studies that can improve national poverty reduction strategies, policies and programmes. This focus was shaped by local policy makers, after we created an Evidence Gap Map of local poverty evidence.

We also encouraged applicants to develop new ideas, team up with our consortium members and find new ways to build on existing datasets.
