To qualify for a Crisis Relief Grant, applicants must be theater writers who are 18 years of age or older.

DGF has the following eligibility requirements: • You must be an individual professional dramatist: – We have an expansive definition of what a dramatist is. We accept playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists who write for live performance. We may accept work that veers towards performance art, devised work, and movement, as long as there is a strong written element.

– To qualify as a dramatist, applicants must fulfill three of the following criteria: — You have written two or more completed full length works for the American theater within the past 10 years and you were at least 18 years old at the time the work was written. We consider full length works to be scripts that are at least 45 minutes long when performed.

— You are currently enrolled in or have graduated from a degree program in dramatic writing or musical theater. — You are a member or have participated in one or more writer’s associations (e.g. Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, the Dramatists Guild, the Playwright’s Center). — Your work has been professionally developed, workshopped, or produced.

— Your work has been presented for paying audience — You have been commissioned or paid to write a play. — We do not support artists who are primarily screenwriters for film or television, stand-up comedians, improvisers, dancers, or musicians who do not write for the stage.

• You must have less than $15,000 in your combined bank accounts – At this time, Crisis Relief Grants are reserved for those who do not have a safety net in times of crisis. – This includes checking and savings accounts and mobile payment services like PayPal or Venmo. • You must have recently experienced an unexpected and substantially disruptive emergency or disaster.

– DGF understands that a lack of investment in the arts economy creates a constant atmosphere of crisis and instability for many artists. Therefore, we hope to accommodate a wide range of circumstances as emergencies. – Eligible crises may include: — Natural/Environmental Disasters: Fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, and other acts of nature.

— Emergency events: Theft, accidents, injuries, and major illness. — Housing emergencies: Eviction, unsafe housing, domestic violence. — Legal Emergencies: Immigration/Visa related emergencies, unexpected legal fees — We do not support requests for aid with student debt or credit card debt.

We do not assist with tax payments. We do not offer grants for assistance with production or artistic expenses. • You must be 18 years or older at the time of your application • You must be working and living in the United States or United States Territories.

Whether you are a little short on a monthly utility bill or medication payment, need to pay for childcare while in production or residency, or have a few weeks between paying gigs, Bridge Grants allow writers to smooth over those difficult patches. To qualify for a Bridge Grant, applicants must be theater writers who are 18 years of age or older. They must be living and working in the U.S. or U.S. Territories.

All grant applications are read by DGF’s grant team. We review primarily for eligibility, making sure all applicants fulfill our requirements, are indeed professional dramatists living and working in the United States.

Then we review whether the applicant’s emergency is an eligible one. Certain applications may be sent to our Grants Committee for additional review. Applicants will typically receive a determination within one month of their application.

Applications from dramatists who have received support from DGF in the past may take longer to process. First time applicants will be prioritized. We generally do not fund applicants that received funding from DGF in the last 12 months.

You can reach us by phone Monday through Thursday from 10am-6pm EST and on Friday from 10am – 1pm EST. What situations are eligible for a Bridge Grant Bridge grants are non-emergency awards. Past bridge grantees have used funds to pay rent in between gigs, replace contact lenses, pay utilities bills, and pay for transportation costs associated with an artistic opportunity.

We recognize that many artistic opportunities require artists to pay extra costs or sacrifice income to participate. We hope a Bridge Grant can help fill that gap and allow you to embrace the opportunities that will forward your career and craft. Do I need to make a living as a theater writer to be eligible?

The amount of income derived from your artistic practice is not a factor in determining eligibility. However, you must have a public facing element to your work either in production, workshop, or publication. When is the deadline to apply?

The 2026 grants cycle will end on December 14, 2026. 2027 applications will open on January 4, 2027. How much funding can I apply for a Crisis Relief Grant?

There is no set amount applicants must apply for. We welcome you to apply for how much funding you need. A typical Crisis Relief Grant ranges between $2,000 – $3,000 Can I simultaneously apply for a Bridge Grant and a Crisis Relief Grant?

No. Applicants who apply for both grants simultaneously will only have their Crisis Relief Grant reviewed. Is my grant considered taxable income? Will I receive a 1099?

No. Your grant is not considered taxable income as it is disaster relief and you will not receive a 1099. Do I have to report to DGF how I use my grant? No. We trust you will use the grant in the ways you outlined in your application.

When will I learn the outcome of my grant application? You will likely hear back within one month of your application date. Applications that are incomplete or missing documentation may experience delayed processing.

Do you have grants to support funding of a theatrical production or workshop? We do not offer grants for productions or artistic expenses at this time. Why was my application denied?

The reason most applications are denied is because applicants are not eligible as theater writers. Some eligible writers may be declined because the situation they are experiencing does not qualify as an unexpected emergency. Some may be declined because they have either recently or repeatedly received support from DGF.

We always try to recommend applicants other resources when we are not able to provide funding. Do you have other resources for funding and support? Yes.
