Department of War organization. Fast and Curious aims to develop logic circuits at least 100 times more energy efficient than current state of the art. Integrated circuits based on CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) technology have been the backbone of computing, but CMOS is nearing its theoretical limits in energy efficiency.
Meanwhile, power-hungry technologies like artificial intelligence and power-constrained, edge-computing environments like space highlight the need for radically more efficient designs. The Fast and Curious Disruption Opportunity (DO) investigates new device physics, materials, and architectures to enable a scalable digital computing technology 2-3 orders of magnitude more energy efficient than CMOS.
The DO will start with simple, transistor-like designs and build up to higher level logic circuits; throughout the program, designs will remain compatible with advanced microelectronic manufacturing. Proposers Day presentation

DARPA's Defense Sciences Office and Biological Technologies Office pre-released four SBIR XL topics on June 3 with proposals open June 24 and due July 22. Read the four as a single coordinated bet on the deployed soldier — sensing, recovery, power, and pathogen defense — and the strategy for filing across the quartet becomes clear.
Read articleRelease 6's SBIR topics got the attention. Its three STTR topics — SHIELDER, fuel-flexible electric propulsion, and hypersonic wind tunnel noise diagnostics — are all Direct-to-Phase-II, all require a research institution to perform at least 30 percent of the work, and all close October 21, 2026. The feasibility gates are the real filter.
Read articleDARPA's Defense Sciences Office pre-released two FY26 SBIR topics on July 1, 2026: FALCON (fusing efficient ML with large language models for interactive analysis of massive data) and Art of Novel Signals (temporal knowledge-graph forecasting from multilingual, multimodal data). Both opened July 22 and close August 19. Here is what each topic wants, how DARPA SBIR economics work, and the strategy to compete in a four-week window.
