Calling all Researchers! Apply for the BIEA Annual Grant Programme 2026–2027 - Global South Opportunities Researchers focusing on Eastern Africa are invited to apply for various grants, including Writing Fellowships, Thematic Research Grants, Dissemination Grants, Workshop Grants, Impact Grants, and a Graduate Attachment Scheme.
Applicants are advised to select the grant that best aligns with their project and submit one application per call. BIEA Annual Grant Programme 2026–2027: Postdoctoral Writing Fellowships BIEA’s Postdoctoral Writing Fellowships support recent PhD graduates in the humanities and social sciences who wish to produce publication-ready articles focused on Eastern Africa. The fellowship lasts three months, providing a monthly stipend of £1,200.
Articles should be prepared for submission to either Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa or the Journal of Eastern African Studies . Fellows may work independently from their home, their own institution, or use BIEA’s library in Nairobi. The fellowship is flexible, allowing fellows to commence at a mutually convenient time, provided that the contract concludes by 31 January 2027 .
Fellows are expected to limit other employment to a maximum of 15 hours per week during the fellowship. In addition to the research article, fellows must contribute a blog or short report for BIEA’s Annual Review (with photos), share updates on LinkedIn, acknowledge BIEA support in the publication, and be prepared to deliver a public presentation either in person or online.
BIEA does not provide production, proofreading, or language-checking support; these remain the responsibility of the fellow. BIEA Annual Grant Programme 2026–2027: Other Grant Opportunities BIEA also offers several other funding streams for researchers: Thematic Research Grants: Support innovative research projects addressing specific themes in Eastern Africa.
Dissemination Grants: Fund activities that share research findings with wider audiences. Workshop Grants: Support the organization of workshops that facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building. Impact Grants: Encourage projects with measurable contributions to academic and societal outcomes.
Graduate Attachment Scheme: Provide hands-on experience for graduate students in research projects at BIEA. BIEA Annual Grant Programme 2026–2027: Researcher Affiliation Services Non-Kenyan researchers seeking to conduct studies in Eastern Africa can apply for BIEA affiliation, a mandatory step for obtaining a research permit from the National Commission for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI) .
Affiliation fees are KES 10,000 for students and KES 20,000 for postdoctoral researchers .
