Since the inception of its extramural grants program in 1946, the Society has awarded more than $2. 2 billion to cancer researchers, clinician-scientists, nurses, and social workers. Many current and past leaders in the field of cancer are American Cancer Society grants recipients, including thirty Nobel Laureates who received Society support in the early stages of their careers.

Among the groundbreaking research that the Society has funded over the past 50 years are Pap smears and mammography for the early detection of cancer, the discovery of conclusive evidence for the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstration of the efficacy of breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer, and development of a cure for childhood leukemia.

The Society focuses its funding on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals rather than projects designed by administrators who are far removed from the front lines of research.

This is because the American Cancer Society believes that independent investigators actively involved in research are in the best position to identify projects with the greatest potential for advancing our knowledge of cancer and our ability to control the disease.

This intellectual freedom to pursue the most promising course of research has yielded proposals from gifted, innovative investigators in medical schools, universities, research institutes, and hospitals throughout the country, proposals for research that can be undertaken employing available knowledge and techniques.

It is by supporting such research, that the Society has played a major role in the important discoveries that have led to a better understanding of cancer causes, prevention, and treatment. American Cancer Society grants cover a broad spectrum of cancer research and training. Health professional training grants support physicians, social workers, and nurses preparing for careers in cancer control.

Research grants support scientists working in the following areas: health policy and outcomes Research Grants for independent investigators Research Scholar Grants for Beginning Investigators — Awarded to investigators in the first eight years of their independent research careers to support basic, preclinical, clinical, and epidemiologic research projects. Initial awards are made for up to four years and for up to $250,000 per year.

Application deadlines: April 1 and October 15 . Research Scholar Grants in Health Services and Health Policy and Outcomes Research for Beginning and Senior Investigators — Awarded to independent investigators at any stage of their careers to support research projects centered on health services and health policy and outcomes research.

Senior principal investigators are strongly encouraged to include an individual at an early career stage as coprincipal investigator. Initial awards are made for up to 4 years and for up to $250,000 per year. Application deadlines: April 1 and October 15.

Research Scholar Grants in Psychosocial and Behavioral Research for Beginning and Senior Investigators — Awarded to independent investigators at any stage in their careers to support research projects centered on the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of cancer. Senior principal investigators are strongly encouraged to include an individual at an early career stage as coprincipal investigator.

Initial awards are made for up to 5 years and for up to $500,000 per year. Application deadlines: April 1 and October 15. Research Opportunity Grants for Beginning and Senior Investigators — Provide rapid, one-time funding for novel ideas or for targeting urgent problems with immediate human benefit.

One-time awards are made for up to $75,000 for 1 year. A letter of intent is required to obtain applications and instructions. No fixed deadline.

Institutional Research Grants — Awarded to institutions as block grants to provide seed money for independent junior investigators to initiate research projects. Grants average $90,000 per year for 1 to 3 years. Application deadline: October 1.

Training and Career Development Postdoctoral Fellowships — Support training of researchers who have received their doctorate to enable them to qualify for an independent career in cancer research (including basic, preclinical, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, and epidemiologic research). Awards are made for 1 to 3 years with progressive stipends of $35,000, $37,000, and $40,000 per year, plus a $2000 per year institutional allowance.

Using special endowment funds, the Society annually selects several of the top-ranked Fellows to receive special 3-year Fellowships with an increased stipend of $138,000.

Application deadlines: March 1 and October 1 Clinical Research Training Grants for Junior Faculty — Support training of junior faculty within the first 4 years of their independent faculty appointments to conduct mentored clinical, epidemiologic, health services, health policy and outcomes, or psychosocial and behavioral research. Awards are made for up to 3 years for up to $150,000 per year.

Application deadlines: March 1 and October 1. Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians — Support primary care physicians with an academic rank of instructor to assistant professor who are pursuing a career with an emphasis on cancer control research, teaching, and practice. Awards are made for 3 years with progressive stipends of $50,000, $55,000, and $60,000 per year.

Application deadline: October 1. Physician Training Awards in Preventive Medicine — Awarded to institutions to support physician training in accredited preventive medicine residency programs that provide cancer prevention and control research and practice opportunities. Awards are made for 4 years in the total amount of $300,000.

Application deadline: May 1. Post-Master's Training Grants in Clinical Oncology Social Work — Awarded to doctoral candidates to conduct research related to the psychosocial needs of persons with cancer and their families. Awards are made for up to 3 years with annual funding of $20,000 (trainee stipend of $15,000, and $5000 for faculty/administrative support).

Application deadline: October 1. Master's Training Grants in Clinical Oncology Social Work — Awarded to institutions to support the training of second-year master's-degree students to provide psychosocial services to persons with cancer and their families. One-year awards are made for $12,000 (trainee stipend of $10,000, and $2000 for faculty/administrative support.

Application deadline: October 1. Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing — Awarded to graduate students pursuing doctoral study in the following cancer nursing fields: research, education, administration, or clinical practice. Awards are made for up to 4 years with a stipend of $15,000 per year.

Application deadline: December 15. Master's Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing — Awarded to graduate students pursuing master's degrees in cancer nursing. Awards are made for up to 2 years in the annual amount of $10,000.

Application deadline: December 15. Research Professorships — Awarded to outstanding mid-career investigators who are making significant contributions to basic cancer research. Up to two awards are made annually for a 5-year term.

The award of $80,000 per year is budgeted at the awardee's discretion. Application forms and instructions are available through the Extramural Grants Department following a discussion with the appropriate Scientific Program Director. Application deadline: March 1.

Clinical Research Professorships — Awarded to outstanding mid-career investigators who are making significant contributions to clinical or epidemiologic cancer research, including cancer control; clinical trials directed toward new therapeutic approaches; and psychosocial, behavioral, health services, and health policy and outcomes research. Translational laboratory research with clinical applications is also appropriate.

Up to two awards are made annually for a 5-year term. The award of $80,000 per year can be budgeted at the awardee's discretion. Application forms and instructions are available through the Extramural Grants Department following a discussion with the appropriate Scientific Program Director.

Application deadline: October 1. Targeted Grants for Research Directed at Poor and Underserved Populations — Provide support for research projects proposed by investigators at various stages of their research career. Applications will be accepted via three mechanisms: Research Scholar Grants, Clinical Research Training Grants for Junior Faculty, and Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Projects must focus on poor or underserved populations, but may address a variety of behavioral, epidemiologic, policy, health care delivery, and clinical and basic science issues. The Society has targeted up to 10% of the research budget to this high priority need. Deadlines vary according to grant mechanism.

Audrey Meyer Mars International Fellowships in Clinical Oncology — Provide 1 year of advanced training in clinical oncology at participating US cancer centers to qualified physicians and surgeons from other countries, particularly countries where advanced training is not readily available. Applications for training in basic cancer research will not be accepted. This program is limited to non-US citizens.

Application deadline: January 15. International Fellowships for Beginning Investigators — Fellowships funded by the American Cancer Society with the objective of fostering a 2-way flow of knowledge, experience, expertise, and innovation to and from the USA.

These awards enable beginning investigators and clinicians to carry out basic or clinical research projects and to develop, acquire, and apply advanced research procedures and techniques in the areas of epidemiology, prevention, causation, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and psycho-oncology through 12-month-long work periods abroad. Application deadline: October 1.
