Feeding Pets of the Homeless Narrated by Robert Osborne From our grantees at @searchdogfoundation A year ago, India was sitting in a Florida shelter awaiting adoption when Amy Couts, an experienced canine handler and trainer, agreed to foster the young Belgian Malinois.

Amy is the founder of 421 K9 Search and Rescue, Inc., a nonprofit where she volunteers for search and rescue operations with her live-find partner, Tango, and human remains detection partner, Fawkes. Amy agreed to foster India, expecting that she would be placed with an agency.

Despite India’s working potential, no agency expressed a need for a working canine at that time, so Amy decided to begin India’s training herself in Electronic Storage Detection (ESD). Amy and India achieved ESD certification through the United States Police Canine Association in March 2025, allowing the twosome to help in the fight against human trafficking and child pornography, as well as other criminal activities.

However, India’s transition to her professional career was complicated by a difficult health challenge. She was diagnosed with severe food and environmental sensitivities that left her in constant discomfort. After exhaustive testing and various natural trials, Amy and her veterinarian determined that bi-monthly Cytopoint injections were the only effective way to provide India with the relief she needed.

Cytopoint works by neutralizing the protein that triggers allergic reactions in dogs. While a single injection is effective for 4 to 8 weeks, it is not inexpensive, especially for a medication India will likely need throughout her lifetime. This year, thanks to SDF’s Canine Healthcare Grant, Amy was able to offset some of the costs of India’s medication.

“India absolutely loves her job,” Amy shared. “I am so thankful she isn’t constantly scratching anymore. We truly appreciate the help in covering her expenses.

😴🦉 Believe it or not, Gold Country Wildlife Rescue currently has TEN baby screech owls in care! This particular youngster weighed just 67. 5 grams during its intake exam – that`s about the weight of a extra large chicken egg.

At this age, owlets are normally tucked safely away in a nest cavity, relying completely on their parents for food, warmth, protection, and guidance. Unfortunately, every one of the baby screech owls currently in our care is orphaned, which means our team is stepping in to provide the care they need until they are ready to return to nature.

While this tiny fluff ball may look like it`s having a hard time staying awake, it`s growing just as we`d hope to see. Before long, those oversized feet and fluffy feathers will give way to a skilled mini flying hunter ready for life back in the wild. For now, though, this little one seems committed to perfecting the art of the nap.

They have been in foster care for 3 weeks and are making progress on house training and puppy manners!

They are complete mixed breeds- we truly have no idea what they might be mixed with- but they will be big! The boys are about 10-11 weeks old, neutered, microchipped, are current on their puppy shots and bordetella, and have been fixed. Apply to adopt at munciearf.

There was no family able to accept him or his herdmates. Truman hasn`t been handled very much and is blind in one eye.

He had no received any medical or farrier care in years. He is also, due to lack of training, likely to be with Heart of Phoenix for the rest of his life. He is learning a routine and doing much better now that his medical needs are met.

Before arriving at Save the Chimps, Torian spent years in biomedical research.

Today, his life couldn`t be more different. He spends his days exploring his island home, climbing, foraging, enjoying fresh pears, and making his own choices alongside his chimpanzee family. Every day is a celebration of the life he was always meant to have, filled with peace, companionship, and the freedom to simply be a chimpanzee.

In Tequila’s group, Axel still carries around his tire toys – sometimes he’ll carry four at once!

He is lovingly known as a “lone ranger” by care staff as he typically likes to do his own thing, but he still looks up to group alpha, Buster, and they spend time hanging out in the habitat together. Axel is a quirky guy, loves to explore, and has favorite items he is fascinated with and collects (likes his tire toys). Meanwhile, Connor also enjoys spending time with his buddy, Buster.

They often hang out together down by the moat or in the woods. They also like to take turns observing the girls in Flora’s group (their neighbors), especially Diane as she’s a spicy lady! Connor is a goofy, social guy.

He’s a bit of a class clown and is very energetic and nosy about his neighbors. He’s just curious and can’t help but keep an eye on them. We can’t wait to see what shenanigans the rest of the Treetop Ten get into later this summer!

Callie was 2 years old, pregnant and hungry when Haley found her in a restaurant parking lot. Now she is loved and thanks to DDAF will never have unwanted litters again.
