Northwest CT Community Foundation | Northwest Connecticut Community… Douglas and Janet Roberts Fund As the town historian, Douglas Roberts seemed to hold the memories of an entire community in his heart. He and Janet, his wife of 47 years, loved animals and the outdoors—growing vegetables, planting flowers in their yard. Janet canned fruits and baked pies.
They enjoyed countless hours of volunteering. Through his estate planning, Doug established the Northwest CT Community Foundation Douglas and Janet Roberts Fund. Learn more about Doug and Janet Roberts Grants from the Douglas and Janet Roberts Fund support the Barkhamsted Historical Society, nonprofit programs and capital projects that benefit residents of Barkhamsted, and scholarships for Barkhamsted students.
Grants are awarded through an invitation-only LOI process. Barkhamsted Historical Society received $21,500 in 2025 to support computer replacements, mini-split heat pumps, garage door replacements, and repairs to two historic art panels. In 2025 Barkhamsted Youth Baseball received $25,000 to support a new playscape and improvements to the viewing areas around the softball field.
Beardsley & Memorial Library received $8,450 in 2025 to support fencing, picnic tables, and security cameras for the newly established Beardsley Garden. In 2025 CT Grange #169 received $33,300 to support kitchen renovations, including architectural drawings and appliances. First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted received $68,000 in 2025 to support replacement of the church organ.
In 2025 New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance received $6,750 to support the purchase of advanced airway management tools with training. Pleasant Valley Fire Department was awarded $29,350 in 2025 to support the replacement of five sets of interior structural firefighting PPE. In 2025 Riverton Theatre received $5,000 to support the resident emergency fund.
Riverton Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $8,500 in 2025 to support the purchase of five sets of ice and swift-water PPE. In 2025 Union Agricultural Society of Barkhamsted , Colebrook and Hartland received $39,500 to support improvements to the Riverton Fairground, including regrading, bandstand and barn repairs/painting, and midway repairs.
West Hartland Volunteer Fire Department received $44,700 in 2025 to support the replacement of a brush truck. Scholarships (2025) : the Northwest CT Community Foundation Douglas and Janet Roberts Fund awarded $85,000 in scholarships for Barkhamsted students for the 2025-2026 academic school year. Beardsley & Memorial Library received $1,250 in 2025 to support the 2025 Summer Reading Program.
Northwest Conservation District received $3,000 in 2025 to support an expansion of previous programs at the Beardsley Library by adding a blueberry patch and starting an adult gardening group to help maintain the green spaces with kits, garden supplies, and program supplies. Barkhamsted Conservation Commission - $3,000 to support the 2025 Earth Day Festival and the 10th anniversary celebration of the Barkhamsted Conservation Commission.
Barkhamsted Center Cemetery Association – $15,000 to support cemetery wall cap repairs and replacement (Phase 1). Barkhamsted Historical Society – $23,000 to support repairs and maintenance for Merrill Tavern and Center Schoolhouse, including shutters, heat pumps, and reroofing an outbuilding.
Barkhamsted Housing Trust – $38,000 to support carrying costs for one year for the Mallory View housing project and the cost of a sewer pump station and generator to connect to existing sewer lines. Barkhamsted Youth Baseball League – $25,000 to support new baseball and softball batting cages at the Riverton Ballfield.
CT State Community College Northwestern – $6,750 to support a documentary film showcasing student research on James Chaugham, a Narragansett man who escaped servitude in Rhode Island and made a home in Barkhamsted. First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted – $20,000 to support site work and building improvements to mitigate exterior water drainage issues.
Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church – $12,500 to support repairs and renovation of the Community Food Bank. Union Agricultural Society of Barkhamsted, Colebrook, and Hartland – $15,000 to support repairs and maintenance of the Riverton Fair grounds, including tree removal, gutter installation, and painting.
Barkhamsted Center Cemetery Association - $25,100 to support a water system upgrade and lawn renewal Barkhamsted Historical Society – $35,700 to support the Merrill Tavern and Barkhamsted Center Schoolhouse preservation projects Barkhamsted Youth Baseball League - $42,000 to support the construction of a new snack shack with two working bathrooms at the Riverton Ballfields Connecticut State Grange Foundation, Inc. - $10,000 to support bathroom repairs/renovations for Riverton Grange Hall First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted - $5,300 to support the replacement of parsonage oil tanks First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted - $34,000 to support the cost of exterior painting of the church, including belfry and window shutters Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests - $35,000 to support a documentary film in connection with the 100th anniversary celebration of People's State Forest in Fall 2024 Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church - $10,000 to support the cost of roof replacement Riverton Theatre - $8,150 to support the purchase of a shed to store sets and costumes Town of Barkhamsted - $21,000 to support a feasibility study for a pedestrian bridge across the Farmington River to connect Peoples State Forest and American Legion State Forest
