Dr. Jeffrey Thomas Stroke Shield Foundation Research Grant Program is sponsored by Dr. Jeffrey Thomas Stroke Shield Foundation. This research grant program is dedicated to preventing stroke and improving stroke treatment outcomes.

The Dr. Jeffrey Thomas Stroke Shield Foundation is now accepting applications for 2018 stroke research funding. Please refer to theJTSSF RFP 2018for more information.

With this request for proposal,JTSSF welcomes submissions that demonstrate the public health impact of combining the resources of medical research and local community providers to optimally and aggressively manage high blood pressure and healthy lifestyle choices in underserved, high-risk hypertensive patients in Alameda County, CA. Applicants are required to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) prior to submitting a grant proposal.

The JTSSF Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) will review the proposal and notify the PI if their LOI is accepted to complete a grant application. **Letters of Intent are due on September 16, 2018**. Please refer to theApplying for a Grantpage for more information on how to submit the LOI.

### **Grant-Making Criteria** Grants are awarded on the basis of merit, available funds and alignment with research questions that advance JTSSF’s mission. Other important criteria include: * Scientific rationale – Proposed projects should address an area of critical unmet need for stroke patients.

* Overall experimental design – The hypothesis and/or objective should be clearly articulated and proposed methods should be appropriate and sufficient to achieve these goals. Details of key measures and success criteria should be described. * Budget – The proposed budget should be reasonable and justified for the research proposed.

Details of personnel (including non-paid collaborators), study reagents and supplies and all other costs should be clearly indicated and justified. * Timeline – Timelines for completing each study should be clearly defined and include relevant milestones. Project goals must be achievable within the award period.

* Strength of the investigator and research environment – The investigative team should be appropriately trained and well suited to carrying out the proposed work. * Institutional support – Mentors must be faculty at the instructor level or higher. Public and private institutions such as hospitals, universities, colleges, and laboratories may submit applications.

The Grant will be awarded to the institution from which the applicant has an affiliation, not to the individual.
