Vote for the 2026 Caring for Community Awards by August 30. In partnership with Carter Myers Automotive and Virginia National Bank, United Way of Greater Charlottesville offers local families vehicle down payment assistance, auto insurance support, affordable auto loan financing, and more for reliable used vehicles through Driving Lives Forward.
For a typical Driving Lives Forward client is normally put toward transportation-related payments. The support offered through Driving Lives Forward lowers this substantially, which is helpful to the many participating families who work multiple jobs and juggle expensive childcare costs.
*Based on the United Way of Greater Charlottesville 2023-2024 Annual Report About the Driving Lives Forward Program Reliable transportation is essential, especially for the rising number of families who work in the City of Charlottesville and live in outlying counties, to access affordable housing. A reliable vehicle is a means to maintaining steady employment and accessing childcare.
Additionally, it helps establish or improve credit, which is vital to a family’s ability to become financially stable and build wealth. United Way of Greater Charlottesville acts as the program administrator and loan-maker in this program, which allows us to ensure our clients receive fair and honest interest rates, instead of loans that can exceed 200% interest.
Loan approvals go to Virginia National Bank , which donates its loan administration process. Carter Myers Automotive sources affordable, safe, and reliable used vehicles (expected to last at least five years) to meet each family’s specific needs. They also inspect the car, perform any needed maintenance, and help the family with a test-drive.
Families also receive insurance referrals with agents who have agreed to work with the program. To participate in the program, a family can be referred/recommended through a United Way partner organization/program or reach out to Ella Jordan at ejordan@unitedwaycville. org to inquire about eligibility.
Once approved, we work with the family to determine an affordable monthly payment for the loan and auto insurance. The average price for a vehicle in the program is $15,000. As lienholder, we receive the loan payments from participating families via ACH, which go directly back toward Driving Lives Forward funding to continue to provide loans for other families.
The small interest received by United Way of Greater Charlottesville also increases the fund balance.
