Home - Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation - Walker Therapeutic & Educational Programs Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Watch our new video - You Can't Pour from an Empty Cup Walker’s Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Program (ECMHC) program provides consultation services that help support the social-emotional development and behavioral health of children in early education and care programs through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).
ECMH consultants provide guidance to programs, educators, and families on addressing the developmental, emotional, and behavioral challenges of infants and young children in early education settings.
ECMH consultants can work in partnership with programs to: Design and put in place program policies, procedures, and practices that keep the social-emotional and behavioral health needs of children in mind Strengthen early education and care environments to support social and emotional development Strengthen skills to identify children with or at-risk for behavioral, developmental, or mental health difficulties Change the curriculum and build behavior management skills to help children with a range of needs Implement positive behavior interventions and supports using evidence-based practices, like the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) Pyramid Model Build relationships with families to support children in the classroom and their homes Develop strategies for staff self-care Keep children in childcare programs ECMH Consultation Services may include: Child observation, assessment, and intervention planning (with guardian consent) Devereaux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) Help with individualized behavior support plans for children using input from caregivers and educators to prevent concerning behaviors Classroom/teacher/center assessment Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool (TPOT) Teaching Pyramid Infant-Toddler Observation Scale (TPITOS) Consultation to teachers, staff, administrators Social emotional skills development Support on transitions, routines, and schedules Mindfulness/meditation strategies Reflective practice/supervision strategies Training for teachers, staff, administrators Social emotional skills and development Mindfulness/meditation strategies Impact of toxic stress and trauma Implicit bias and systemic racism Modeling and coaching for teachers, staff, and administrators Family engagement and support Guidance for developing ongoing partnerships with families Outreach to families to provide direct support Referrals/resources/linkages Environmental modifications Physical facilities modification/classroom arrangement Strategies for creating supportive learning environments Social emotional skills and development Communities Served: Boston, Braintree, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Cohasset, Dedham, Hull, Milton, Needham, Quincy, Randolph, Revere, Somerville, Wellesley, Weston, Weymouth, and Winthrop.
