**The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), together with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), launched the ECORELIM–DRC programme today that will foster the restoration of 9,000 hectares, or 90 square kilometres, of critically degraded Miombo woodlands, strengthen climate resilience, and secure sustainable livelihoods for rural communities across the regions of Southern Kwango, Haut Katanga and Lualaba.
With nearly US$10 million in GEF financing and US$70 million in co-financing through IFAD’s ongoing AVENIR project, the five-year Integrated Sustainable and Adaptive Management Approaches to Support Ecosystem Restoration and Livelihoods Diversification in the Miombo Landscapes of Southern Kwango, Haut Katanga and Lualaba in DRC, or ECORELIM-DRC initiative aims to avoid nearly 400,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions and benefit 185,600 households.
“Restoring woodland is essential to preserving biodiversity and sustaining livelihoods in rural areas. By rehabilitating Miombo woodlands and promoting climate-smart practices, this project will not only safeguard biodiversity but also empower rural communities to thrive in the face of climate change,” said Arsene Brou Assande, IFAD Country Director ad interim.
COP 30 in Brazil has placed forest protection at the heart of the climate agenda. The Miombo woodlands of the DRC are among the world’s top-priority areas for ecosystem restoration due to their size, their importance to local economies, and severe degradation, further intensified by increasingly frequent drought and flooding.
These ecosystems are essential for biodiversity, rural livelihoods, and climate regulation, yet they face mounting pressures from unsustainable land-use practices such as shifting cultivation, charcoal production, deforestation, and illegal logging, as well as increasing climate variability.
“The ECORELIM–DRC programme integrates local solutions to deliver global environmental benefits while strengthening resilience and supporting sustainable livelihoods for thousands of households in rural communities in the country,” said Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, GEF CEO and Chairperson.
The programme will strengthen resilience and food security by advancing climate-smart agriculture, training 1,500 people and supporting 60 cooperatives engaged in sustainable honey, mushroom, and caterpillar production.
“Through the implementation of the ECORELIM project in the targeted intervention areas (Southern Kwango, Haut Katanga and Lualaba), located in severely degraded Miombo ecosystems, the DRC, building on lessons learned in areas such as land use planning, sustainable agriculture, food security and rural financing, aims to improve the well-being of local communities while restoring degraded forest and terrestrial ecosystems."
