PROFILE: Established in 2008, the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville (CFGH) is based in Huntsville, Alabama, and is the community funder for this region of the Southeast. It seeks to “mobilize generosity to improve quality of life,” with a vision to be the area’s “trusted leader in strategic philanthropy. ” Key strategies include inspiring, simplifying, and amplifying local giving.

Around 1,000 nonprofits serve Madison County, Alabama, and CFGH works with these groups to establish nonprofit funds and to offer an annual collaborative training event. CFGH supports nonprofits and donors in the community is serves. Grants for Human Services, Health, Education, the Environment, Racial Equity, Economic and Community Development This community foundation offers several grant opportunities and access to funds that are constantly evolving, so check back often. Some opportunities include: Give256 Fund : A pooled giving initiative where emerging local philanthropists award $2,500–$7,500 grants to nonprofit projects in Greater Huntsville.

Compass Society Grants : Awards up to $50,000 for collaborative, high‑impact, visionary proposals that span at least three focus areas of their Quality of Life framework. Requires three or more partners, innovation, and scalability.

Pathway to Sustainability Fund : Offers $10,000 grants to Madison County nonprofits providing direct social services (e.g., case management), focusing on collaborative capacity building and measurable outcomes. Racial Equity Fund: Since 2020, supports nonprofits addressing racial equity gaps across Greater Huntsville; grants often include matching components and are supported via a growing endowed fund.

The Alabama A&M Star Fund program, initiated in 2014, provides scholarships to students inducted into a STEM program at Alabama A&M University. The foundation also partnered with a financial planning firm called Vector Wealth Strategies to make grants in the areas of health, human services, education, and disaster recovery. The funder has reported over $11 million in total net assets and more than $8.

4 million in total grant distributions to at least 414 nonprofits since 2009. CFGH usually has several grant programs running at any given time. Search the foundation’s grant opportunities page for current programs.

All grantmaking is regional, exclusively for nonprofits serving the Greater Huntsville area—Madison, Limestone, Marshall, and Morgan Counties. The foundation does not accept unsolicited general proposals; grant programs are open by program-specific application windows and managed via online portals.
