Emergency Housing Assistance (EHA) is sponsored by Orange County Government. The EHA program assists households in Orange County that are earning 30% or less of Area Median Income (AMI) and have experienced a life-changing event in the last three months which affects their ability to pay rent.

Emergency Housing Assistance Emergency Housing Assistance The EHA program assists households in Orange County that are earning 30% or less of Area Median Income (AMI) and have experienced a Life-Changing Event in the last three months which affects their ability to pay rent.

Life-Changing Events include the death, illness or loss of employment of a household member who was contributing toward rent. Orange County residents with active court summons for eviction are also eligible.

We may be able to help with some or all of the following: Late pet and other fees to landlords, and Housing-related court fees Download the Emergency Housing Assistance flyer (PDF) Applications without all the necessary documentation will be denied. Please do not submit an application until you have all the necessary documentation.

Proof of rental arrears owed Proof of Life-Changing Event, such as (death certificate, hospital summary, doctor's note, employer notice of termination, etc) or Proof of eviction, court summons We process applications based on the date received. There is a cap of $4,500 in assistance, and due to limited funds we are only able to assist 12 households per month.

We are unable to give status updates on how long until your household will be assisted. Households are limited to one EHA award per fiscal year ( July to June ) Assistance is limited to households earning 30% of Area Median Income or less.

The latest (AMI) for FY 2025 in the Durham-Chapel Hill, NC HUD Metro FMR Area are: $26,750 for a 1-person Household $30,550 for a 2-person Household $34,350 for a 3-person Household $38,150 for a 4-person Household $41,250 for a 5-person Household $44,360 for a 6-person Household Note: For a larger-sized household, please email Kamala Cooper at kcooper@orangecountync.

gov anytime Use our Submittable online portal to apply Include a copy of the court summons, your updated lease, a current ledger, and proof of income. You can get a copy of the lease and ledger from your landlord. We process your application We work on applications with the earliest court dates.

We will reach out if we need more information from you or your landlord. Call us if your eviction status changes.

We approve or deny your request We may be able to approve an application if your landlord will accept a payment from us, and you have not met the funding cap of ($4,500) We reach out to your landlord If we approve your request, we send papers to your landlord to be sure they will accept EHA, and to protect you from being evicted during this time.
