Kresge’s Environment Program helps cities combat and adapt to climate change while advancing racial and economic justice. We believe that cities should work on limiting climate change and preparing for its effects at the same time. Climate change hits some communities harder than others.

The pollution that creates dangerous heat waves and severe storms causes the most harm in neighborhoods where people have lower incomes and in communities of color. That’s why we focus on making sure these community voices lead climate decisions—from city halls to state capitals to Washington, D. C.

When leaders at all levels of government think about climate change as they plan new infrastructure, decide how land gets used, and make other big decisions, they can help their communities both reduce climate change and get ready for its impacts.

Our investments are prioritized into two categories. Supporting and strengthening leaders and organizations whose work is critical to addressing climate change while advancing racial and economic justice.

We believe climate policies developed and implemented with the engagement of impacted residents will be more equitable, effective and durable.

This belief has guided our work with the following initiatives and strategies. Initiative: Climate Change, Health and Equity (CCHE) CCHE strengthens a unified movement for climate justice and health equity by advancing community-driven solutions and national movements through a network of community-based organizations, health institutions, public health departments and health practitioners.

Initiative: Climate Resilient and Equitable Water Systems (CREWS) CREWS transforms urban stormwater and wastewater systems to provide reliable and equitable services to all community residents.

Initiative: Equitable & Just Energy Transition (EJET) Facilitating an urban energy transition that eliminates carbon pollution, builds power for low-wealth communities and communities of color, and propels racial and economic equity Strategy: Public Sector Leadership Support Work to accelerate the efforts of public-sector leaders whose work is critical to advancing an equitable climate action agenda.

Strategy: Climate Justice Movement Support Work to support leaders, organizations, and the network infrastructure to advance the climate justice movement.
