Greenspaces and urban parks create more equitable and livable neighborhoods while supporting climate resiliency, water management, healthy food access, job opportunities and cleaner air and water. We recognize the historical, cultural and community significance of where we work and acknowledge that the understanding of and need for these greenspaces often lies in the hands of long-time residents.

That’s why our approach relies on active listening and close collaboration with neighbors, local partners and civic leaders to strategically implement their vision. We bring residents and municipalities to the same decision-making table to build trust and promote collaborative projects in historically underrepresented communities. Achieving environmental and economic goals often requires solving complex problems.

We bring strategic conservation expertise to achieve the multiple benefits from investing in clean air, clean water, habitat, climate resilience and adaptation, and community livability. We help communities identify their conservation priorities and goals, and we recommend high-impact and cost-effective implementation strategies that help build the capacity of communities to fulfill their conservation visions.

Through our balanced approach to nature and our built environment, we have performed green infrastructure activities in almost 40 states and have completed greenspace plans for three of the largest metropolitan areas in the country — helping revitalize neighborhoods, unite communities and position cities to thrive for every resident.

2026 Urban Conservation & Community Fellowship Applications The Urban Conservation and Community (UCC) Fellowship Program is aimed at identifying high-potential individuals interested in working with community-based nonprofit organizations. Applications are now open for one-year, full-time paid Fellowships in Washington, DC; Detroit, MI; Pontiac, MI; and Altadena, CA. All applications are due April 6 at midnight PST.

Parks with Purpose in Raleigh Our Parks with Purpose initiative has delivered equitable conservation outcomes to residents in the Biltmore Hills and Rochester Heights communities. This community garden and gathering place was stewarded by neighbors and advocates to honor a beloved matriarch of Atlanta’s English Avenue community.
