Use a site such as FastWeb to find scholarships based on your club affiliations, academic accomplishments and more. You can also use a simple Google search to find scholarships geared toward your interests (ex: “4-H scholarships”). Take the time to write essays.

Often, scholarships that require students to submit an essay have fewer applicants, meaning your chances of being selected are higher. It’s worth the extra effort. Avoid online writing services.

Students who use paid services to write or edit their scholarship essays are less likely to be chosen because schools will notice a marked difference between their application and essay. These services also do not show the scholarship administrator a genuine version of who you are. However, DO ask a friend or teacher to read your essay and application for any mistakes that you may have missed.

When filling out paper applications, be sure to use neat, legible handwriting. Talk to your guidance counselor about scholarships available through the school that you might qualify for. Follow all instructions carefully and make sure you are submitting all the required parts (including letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.).

Stay organized and know the deadline for each scholarship you are applying for. Search locally – look for scholarships offered through area banks, schools, churches, clubs and businesses. Frequently Asked Questions When will applications open?

Most applications will open December 1 and will close February 24. Some individual scholarships will have different open and close dates. See the list of all Available Scholarships for exact dates for all applications.

Is there a fee to apply for scholarships? No, there is not a fee to apply. Can I apply as a junior in high school?

The Legacy Scholarship is for high school juniors from Bexar or Webb counties and has a separate application process. Contact the Legacy Scholarship Team at legacyscholarship@saafdn. org for more information.

Can you tell me if I submit my application correctly? We receive many applications and it is difficult for us to inform each person if their application was submitted correctly. You will receive an email notification that your application was received after you have submitted it.

It is important that you check your email for updates as we will communicate by email if more information is needed. At the end of the process, in May, you will receive an email notification as to whether you were awarded any scholarships. Can I still apply for a scholarship if I missed the deadline?

No, our application deadlines are firm. Do I need to submit an official or unofficial transcript with my application? You can submit an official or unofficial transcript, but it must include all required information listed within the application: your name , the name of your school , your most recent semester grades , and your cumulative GPA .

Transcripts missing one or more of the requirements will result in your application being denied. Please note that you must submit an official transcript for the Duncan Scholars Program Scholarship and the Dan L Duncan Houston Safari Club Foundation Scholars . How and when will I be notified if I receive a scholarship?

You will be notified by email in May with whether you were selected to receive an award or not. If you are selected to receive a scholarship, your email will contain your award information and next steps to accepting your scholarship. If you are not selected, please note that due to the large volume of applications received, we typically do not provide individual details into why an application was not awarded.

You can email us any specific questions you may have. Can I attend any school and receive my scholarship? Depending on the scholarship you receive, there may be limitations to the college/university you can attend.

Those details are outlined within each scholarship’s specific criteria. The Foundation does not award scholarships to students attending an international college/university. When is my check sent to school?

Each school is different, but it could take up to 4 weeks to post to your account. Contact your school’s financial aid office or bursar to get more information. Will my check arrive before school starts?

It is possible that your check may not arrive before school starts, though we try to have all checks mailed out by August. What should I do if my check does not arrive before school starts? You should check with your financial aid office regarding emergency funding, payment plans and show them a copy of the award email sent to you by the Area Foundation.

We can also send your financial aid office an email letting them know your funds are coming. Just contact us to let us know. When will my school post the check to my account?

Each school is different, but it could take up to 4 weeks to post to your account. My school has not received my check. What should I do?

Your school may take up to 4 weeks to post your check. After 4 weeks, please contact us for next steps. Can the scholarship check be sent to me?

No, all scholarship checks are made payable to the school you will be attending and mailed directly to your financial aid office. Will my check be delayed if I change my mind as to the school I am attending? Yes, your check may be delayed, especially if a check has already been sent to the school you listed on your Award Acceptance Form.

What should I do if I change schools mid-year? Contact your financial aid office and let them know you are transferring schools. Submit a change of school form .

If I transfer school in-between semesters, can my check be sent to the new school? It depends on the criteria of the scholarship you receive. Some scholarship funds must be used at specific schools.

It is not always possible to transfer the checks to another school. How long before you forward my check to the new school? If there are no criteria restrictions, once we receive your award from the school, and we receive a change of school form from you, we can forward the award to your new school.

How long will it take the school, where the check was originally sent, to return the check? It could take several weeks for the school to return the check. Can the Area Foundation send a new check to my new school before the refund is received?

No, we must wait for the refund to be sent back to us. Renewal Process Update for the Fall 2025/Spring 2026 School Year We are no longer partnered with Scholarship America. All communications and renewal process will come through the San Antonio Area Foundation.

We have made some improvements to make it even easier to continue receiving support for your education. Renewal applications open on March 1 st , 2025, and will be available through our scholarship portal. Renewal applications and required materials must be submitted by May 26 th , 2025 Notifications of renewal decisions will be sent at the beginning of summer and funds will be disbursed at the end of summer.

Detailed instructions and resources for renewals for the Fall 2025/Spring2026 academic year will be sent when the application opens. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please reach out to our team – schrenew@saafdn. org .

When will I receive my email to renew my scholarship? Annual renewals will receive your renewal instructions by email in May of each year. Semester renewals (limited the Harvey Najim Scholarship , Valero Scholarship , and Duncan Scholarship ) will receive your renewal instructions by email in May for the Fall semester and December for the Spring semester.

Do I need to apply for renewal every semester? The only scholarships that requires you to apply for renewal each semester are the Harvey Najim Scholarship , Valero Scholarship , and Duncan Scholarship . All other renewable scholarships require you to renew every year during May – June.

Am I eligible to receive the scholarship, even though I do not meet the GPA requirement? Duncan Scholars may qualify for a probationary semester. Please contact duncanscholars@saafdn.

org . Najim and Valero Scholars may qualify for a probationary semester. Please contact schrenew@saafdn.

org . For all other renewable scholarships, if you do not meet the GPA requirement you are not eligible to receive your award. Can I appeal the decision to my donor if I do not meet the GPA requirement?

Duncan Scholars may qualify for a probationary semester. Please contact duncanscholars@saafdn. org .

Najim and Valero Scholars may qualify for a probationary semester. Please contact schrenew@saafdn. org .

For all other renewable scholarships, if you do not meet the GPA requirement you are not eligible to receive your award. Do I have to attend school full-time in order to receive my scholarship? If a requirement for your scholarship is attending school full-time, you must attend school full-time.

Some scholarships may also award part-time students, but the award amount will be reduced. Please contact us at schrenew@saafdn. org to determine how your scholarship will be impacted.

What if I am graduating and cannot attend school full-time? Please contact us at schrenew@saafdn. org .

What should I do if I do not plan to attend school during either the fall or spring semesters? If you do not plan to attend school, you should contact us at schrenew@saafdn. org .
